I'm trying to test a gentoo image I've been working on in a virtualbox. Because I don't know what I'm doing that well I wanted to start by running it off a usb stick and virtual machine, and so I think I've run into some hiccups because of changing graphics drivers, but even after attempting to clear that up I can't get things to work.

# uname -a
Linux testing 5.2.11 #1 SMP Tue Sep 3 00:10:01 CDT 2019 x86_64 Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790K CPU @ 4.00GHz GenuineIntel GNU/Linux

Xorg.0.log
For some reason this log doesn't show vboxvideo at all, it just shows some other modules I had installed in the past. I've looked through /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ and can't figure out where these old modules are coming into the picture.

TLDR information that might be helpful if things look odd

What I've been doing so far...

Followed gentoo guide in a chroot to install system up through major software including lightdm, xfce4-meta, chromium, etc.
Built a kernel with virtualization and virtual device support, along with amdgpu and radeon support as modules because I eventually want to use it on a usb stick.
Moved gentoo chroot installation into a disk image, installed grub, and converted the disk image to a VDI
The image boots to console just fine, but won't load xorg
I noticed elsewhere that my problems might be having too much video card support, so I updated VIDEO_CARDS to only have vboxvideo for now and rebuilt packages with emerge --ask --verbose --newuse --update --with-bdeps=y world

Arg, figured it out myself eventually ... thanks to having another virtualbox running Solus

Apparently you need both the vboxvideo and vmwgfx driver for vmware, which should have been obvious when I looked at lspci and at some point I did have both vboxvideo and vmware but at that time I also had nvidia/etc.

So with that said, once I got both modules in place lightdm is now working just fine.
