PostPosted: Tue Aug 06, 2019 3:09 pm    Post subject: emerge freetype hangs at econf Reply with quote

I'm trying to emerge freetype, and the process hangs at
Code:
 * econf: updating freetype-2.9.1/builds/unix/config.sub with /usr/share/gnuconfig/config.sub
It just stops. I left it to run overnight, and it does nothing. I tried to check on the status of the processes, and they appear to be doing nothing. No CPU usage, no I/O. All the processes are asleep.

I don't really know much about portage, so I can't dig too much into what's going on, but I did add a couple of einfos to isolate the line where it's going wrong. It's this one:
Code:
 ECONF_SOURCE="${S}" econf "${myeconfargs[@]}"

I assumed that this must be a problem with either freetype or with gnuconfig, so I tried emerging different versions of both (including bleeding-edge), but to no avail.

I also tried replacing the apparently offending /usr/share/gnuconfig/config.sub with an empty script, just to see if that step would complete. It did not, so I don't think it's a problem with the config.sub script.

I have not experienced this behavior with any other package or on any other system, but I did notice that config.sub and config.guess were evaluated in opposite order on my other system. I have no idea if that is relevant.

This is completely beyond my expertise. Any ideas?

  1. The output of 'emerge --info' is truncated. The most important part is missing. Maybe a copy&paste error? Please add the missing output.

  2. Please post the output of
    Code:
    emerge -pv freetype

Thank you for your help.

I have added the missing part of emerge --info and the output of emerge -pv freetype.

I tried to reproduce the error, but I can't. Your configuration looks fine - I don't see anything wrong there.

I'm sorry - I can't help.

What happens if you disable the sandbox?
Code:
FEATURES="-sandbox -usersandbox" emerge --oneshot freetype

That worked! I haven't any idea why. Will you please kindly explain? I'd love to know how to address things like this in the future.

I can't explain. It's just a rule I learned over time: if I get very strange problems during an emerge which cannot be explained, I try to disable the sandbox. It happens only seldom: maybe once a year - so it's not a general method to solve emerge problems.
