Howdy,

I don''t know about you, but once in a blue moon when I
do my etc-update after an 'emerge -u world' I loose some of the
config files I've edited.

Of cource, it's due to sloppyness from my side, but etc-update typically presents me with some 50 files it want's me to consider.

I then typically carefully consider each file, starting with the first and so on. But, and here is the thing, I sometimes just seem to accidentily miss some file. I maintain gentoo on a bunch of computers, and, well I am not entirely pleased with the way etc-update works. It's a little bit too error prone for me. For starters I don't want etc-update to even ask me what to do with files I've never changed or touched.

Can that be done ??

Is the dispatch-conf utility for me, I can't seem to find no docs for it, but the source appears to do what I want, never tried it though ...

dispatch-conf is fantastic. If you emerge rcs (Revision Control System), then set the relevant option in /etc/dispatch-conf.conf (and I would suggest setting all options to yes!) then your updating config files will become much, much more painless :)

Ok, I tried it (dispatch-conf) and it seems to do exactly what Iwas asking for. Will use. BTW, is this some kinda new tool, or how come it's not mentioned in the normal userdocs on the gentoo site ?

It certainly seems both less error prone and also more newbie friendly than etc-update .....
