I have just replaced my computer monitor. It is very similar to the previous one, but the same configuration file does not work. I can use nvidia-settings to get the desired resolution, but logging out and logging back in gives the low resolution. This happens even if I ask nvidia-settings to update the xorg.conf file for the new settings. In the xorg.conf in the last section ("Screen") I've tried device "Device0, and "NVidia GEForce GTX 970". They work the same way. Any suggestions most welcome. Thanks
Fred

It has been long time since I used nvidia-drivers, but I seem to remember it kept the settings in ~/.nvidiarc (or similar). Do you have it? Is it user-writable?

All I have in ~ is .nvidia-settings-rc, which is user writable, but this only seems to deal with the nvidia-settings program itself. A locate .nvid does not showup anything useful. Thanks for the thought.

Just guessing. Something goes wrong with reading EDID perhaps? Any clues in Xorg log?

I don't see anything in the /var/log/Xorg.0.log file that helps me to identify a problem, but just in case, it is posted belwo.
Thanks.

You probably need to define a custom modline for that. Just delete it... Not sure why it's not falling back to something sane.

That line was in the section for a monitor that is not being used. So I deleted it and also tried adding a modeline computed using https://arachnoid.com/modelines//
The "Monitor section I'm now trying has
Code:
Section "Monitor"
    Identifier     "Monitor0"
    VendorName     "Unknown"
    ModelName      "VIZ V505-G9"
    HorizSync       15.0 - 140.0
    VertRefresh     23.0 - 76.0
### 3840x2160 @ 60.00 Hz (GTF) hsync: 134.10 kHz; pclk: 712.34 MHz
    Modeline "3840x2160_60.00" 712.34 3840 4152 4576 5312 2160 2161 2164 2235 -HSync +Vsync
EndSection

The end result does not change. I had tried this kind of modeline when I first started having trouble.

Fred Krogh,

Trim your xorg.conf to just
Code:
Section "Device"
    Identifier     "Device0"
    Driver         "nvidia"
    VendorName     "NVIDIA Corporation"
    BoardName      "GeForce GTX 970"
EndSection
and let the autoblackmagic do its thing.

You will get a right handed mouse and USA keyboard.

The nVidia driver will not use your modelines unless you use the options to tell it you really know what you are doing.

Check your monitor.
Code:
emerge  x11-misc/read-edid

It contains two programs, one to dump the EDID data and one to parse it. Xorg will use the first listed modeline and it should be the highest resolution one.
There is a trap for the unwary here. Not all interfaces and cables are created equal, this can cause lower video resolutions to be used.

-- edit --

Your TV has HDMI 2 ports, so it can support 3840x2160@60 inputs.
What do you have on your graphics card?
What about video the cable?

may it be that you have xrandr somewhere which overrides the settings?
maybe recompiling the driver would help somehow?
Code:
emerge @module-rebuild

also try with clean, new 20-nvidia.conf, in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d, you do have it right?
try this command to spit new skeleton of nvidia.conf according to the driver
Code:
sudo nvidia-xconfig -o /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf

sudo is important, nvidia-xconfig is not present in the root user.

I've learned a tiny bit, but still things don't work although all the suggestions above have been tried. Interestingly if I do startx from a console window as root, then X comes up with the configuration I want. But as myself from a console window, I get the low resolution that has plagued me. Perhaps the fact that it all works as root, or the results from get-edid |parse-edid given below will suggest something to someone. The warnings in particular may suggest something.
Quote:
# get-edid |parse-edid
This is read-edid version 3.0.2. Prepare for some fun.
Attempting to use i2c interface
No EDID on bus 0
No EDID on bus 1
No EDID on bus 3
No EDID on bus 4
No EDID on bus 5

256-byte EDID successfully retrieved from i2c bus 2
Looks like i2c was successful. Have a good day.

It is OK for another user and is not OK with your user? Did you try and create a test user? If it is so then the problem is in your home directory, some configuration file for your DE/WM perhaps?

Thank you. The answer is someplace in ~/.config/xfce4. I moved it to ~/.config/xfce4.sav, and all comes up with the right resolution, but of course some things are not as I would like. I guess some of the directories in xfec4.sav can replace some in xfce4 until I break something. But the main problem is solved. It seems mysterious to me that all was working as it should with the previous monitor and then with the new monitor things go weird.
