Several boxes, all Core 2 Duo, G31m chipset (GMA3100)

In all of them, the system slows to a screetching halt in :

- SDDM (slow to type in password)
- KDE screen locker (absolute freeze for half minute at a time)
- All KDE Plasma settings windows where graphics are presented (theme settings, desktop wallpaper chooser, etc)

I haven't cared enough to repair it back then (just disabled locking), but now i started doing clean installs (on 2 of the boxes atm) and the same behavior is still present. They all were flying fast with the older KDE 4 installs (the ones before the now-became-old KDE 5 installs)

It seems to me that something with Qt's rendering went stupid

Changing Opengl/Xrender in KDE compositor options have no or atleast no significant effect

Desktop effects do work and for the most part don't appear to be slow at all

Here is from one of the systems (the other one might differ but not much) :

Your Xorg log says you have an intel GPU but your glxinfo says you're running inside a VM with software rendering. Which is it?

Although this no longer seems to be the case, I seem to recall seeing glxinfo print the VMware bit when it had no access to hardware acceleration and fell back to doing software emulation.

Have you tried not disabling DRI (hardware acceleration) in xorg.conf?

Tried. Does not make a difference

And the freezes don't feel like the impact of yes/no DRI anyway. Plasma freezes when opening the wallpaper choice window. The screen locker will wait as much as 30 sec to redraw before the password field appears. I think it wouldn't be that slow even if redrawing the entire screen by CPU, if not for some actual problem with something. On the other side web browsers (scrolling zooming), Kwin effects, etc all work perfectly

1. Set the following variable VIDEO_CARDS="i915 i965 intel". This is just to be sure, as I've seen some odd issues when intel is not added to the graphics cards
2. Change the USE variable and add "glamor dri3" and run emerge -pvuD --newuse world
3. Finally change your xorg config to the following:

Section "Device"
Identifier "intel"
Driver "modesetting"
# Option "NoAccel" "True"
# Option "AccelMethod" "sna"
Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection

As I've seen some weird issues when using recent xorg-server versions with xf86-video-intel as it's not been updated for a couple of years. If you're forced to use xf86-video-intel like me (hybrid graphics do not work otherwise) be sure to use the latest GIT version, which is xf86-video-intel-9999, as it tends to work better (the stable version caused my graphics to freeze or sometimes just drop to a blinking cursor or my monitor would go to sleep out of nowhere, graphical corruption etc.). You can unmask it by adding x11-drivers/xf86-video-intel ** to a package.accept_keywords.d/filename file

Set the use flags and recompiled

With the new xorg.conf contents X cant start at all. With Section "Device" commented out everything is same as before

(posting from a different machine than the one in the beginning of the trherad, but with same install, same hardware and same problem)

Complete xorg.conf
Code:
Section "Module"
Load "dri"
Load "dri2"
Load "vgahw"
Load "fb"
Load "xaa"
Load "int10"
Load "vbe"
Load "shadowfb"
Load "shadow"
Load "fbdevhw"
Load "exa"
Load "glamoregl"
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "intel"
Driver "modesetting"
Option "DRI" "3"
EndSection
