In preparation for upcoming KVM install, I installed bridge-utils and qemu.

I have not set created any tap devices or created a linux bridge yet. Why is ifconfig showing tun0 and (UNSPEC)?

You might want to search for installed packages that need a TUN/TAP peer-to-peer connection, such as OpenVPN or libvirt (latter of which has been ruled out). There are a couple like such.
