EDIT: i enabled module signing in my kernel. when i installed the nvidia driver i put the commands to sign the modules from the wiki page into a shell script. unfortunately, i didn't think to add nvidia-drm in there. ugh. marked solved. :oops:

hello all. i'm getting a black screen with no backlight when running startx. i have to ctrl+alt+f1 out of it and ctrl+c the x server. when i change my xorg config to use the intel modesetting driver, my window manager starts up just fine. if anyone has any ideas, i'd really appreciate any help i can get to figure this out. i found a topic from a couple years back where the guy had seemingly the same problem, but he never did resolve it. hopefully i just configured something wrong.

GPU switching on Linux is not as automatic as on Windows. The nVidia GPU is not connected directly to the screen, so if you configure it like that, it won't work. Have you taken a look at https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVIDIA/Optimus ?

yes. the configuration is pretty much exactly the same as this example from that wiki article:

also the nvidia handbook it links to has the same. did i miss something? i'm happy to try any suggestions or provide more files or logs that might be useful.

also i tried putting 'xrandr --listproviders > ~/providers' in my .xinitrc and i got this back:

as you can see, NVIDIA-0 doesn't seem to have 'Source Output' anywhere in there, so I think my xrandr commands aren't working right.
