|
|
Hello,
I was tinkering around with the kernel so that I can use the HDMI port on my laptop.
Before installing the new kernel I backed up everything under then installed the new kernel.
As you would imagine, the new kernel failed to boot properly so I used my backup to revert the kernel and boot loader to their original state.
However, now refuses to work and gives an error.
I haven't found anything useful on google so far so I've come to ask.
Any help would be very much appreciated.

Hi shinjitumala,
welcome to the Gentoo forums!
I can't tell you what went wrong. But maybe we can help you to get your new kernel up and running.
- Which bootloader do you use? Grub 2? How did you create its config file '/boot/grub/grub.cfg''? Did you run
Code: | grub-mkconfig -o /boot/grub/grub.cfg |
after you copied the new kernel to /boot?
Please post the output of
Please post the output of
Please post your new kernel config (which didn't work) using wgetpaste.
Thanks for posting Xorg.log and the output of 'lspci -v'. That's exactly what we need.

Thank you for all the response! I just woke up so I'll start working on fixing my Xorg now.

- I used grub2. I ran /boot/grub/grub.cfg after the first time I failed to start Xorg.
Just to clarify, this problem occurred when I was reverting to the old kernel because my new kernel failed to boot.
I was hoping to continue to work on the new kernel using the old desktop environment because it's convenient.
The reason the new kernel failed is probably because I did not use genkernel. Using the makefile never worked for me, for some reason... even though I followed the handbook.
I will re-try that part later today and will post updates if I make any progress.
- Here is the output of:
I copied everything from the old /boot and put it back when trying to revert. So unless I made a grave error, this should be the same as when X was starting properly.

To give some context, I was in the process of trying to get my HDMI port to work so I can use 2 displays with my laptop. Apparently, I need to properly configure my hybrid GPUs in order to make them function. I hope that information helps.

That's your error. The kernel you are booting has no Intel DRM enabled (DRM_I915). Maybe you are booting wrong kernel? 'uname -a' will tell. |
Here is the output of:

I'm not sure what it means at the moment. I will update the post if I find out something useful about it.

Code: | ls -lah /usr/bin/Xorg |

It seems that everyone can read and execute the file.

Just in case, I will also post the output of:

I will be posting some updates if I make progress. Thank you again for the replies!

Oh. Oh no. I did not. This is probably the reason it suddenly stopped booting. So I guess I have to make the new kernel work... |

It needs suid set.

I see. I didn't know that. I will keep those information in mind when I run into problems relating to Xorg permissions in the future.
But for now, using Code: | genconfig all --menuconfig | then changing the things that I want to change seems to have fixed the problem.
-------------
[Conclusion]
As Jaglover mentioned above,
the reason behind the error was because I only backed up the files under /boot and not the ones under /lib/modules
Therefore, my kernel was not able to detect some of the hardware that is needed to run Xorg.
Thank you for all the help guys. |
