emerge sync to try to update my system to latest version(s). Yields an error something like "connection refused to cvs.gentoo.org".

Previous emerge commands for individual packages (samba, php, whatever) have always worked. Can anyone suggest a solution?

PC is on an internal IP routed through an SMC switch, but this has always been true.

I thought the command to update a system was 'emerge rsync && emerge --update system'.

I thought that too. Perhaps I shouldn't have taken the text of the Gentoo 1.2 Release page too literally where it said "Existing users need only emerge sync to be up-to-date." Still an odd error. I'll try the rsync variant.

BTW - as a new homebrewer, the beer storage signature is not wasted...

are you actually supposed to be connecting to cvs.gentoo.org? I thought that had been changed a while ago to rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage

perhaps check your make.conf settings? although I don't know why previous ones would have worked.

I had this happen in a previous version of Gentoo. To fix it I just went into the /etc/make.conf and set SYNC="rsync://rsync.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"
and that fixed it if I recall correctly.
