Every once in a while I have to install Gentoo on a new machine. And every time, this problem pop's up and the solution can be hard work to find around the internet.

So, I'm gonna post it here for my own future use and also to help others if the get the same issue.

In a storage unit with many files, net-misc/unison might complain about insufficiente file watchers when syncing the entire /home from one machine to the freshly installed one.

To raise this limit, add these lines in this file:

Code:

/etc/sysctl.conf:

fs.inotify.max_user_watches = 999999
fs.inotify.max_queued_events = 999999
fs.inotify.max_user_instances = 999999

Now Unison can handle it.
