https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-47941794

Quote:

A major fire has engulfed much of one of France's most famous landmarks - the medieval Cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris. Its spire has collapsed.

The cause is not yet clear, but officials say that it could be linked to renovation work.

A major operation to tackle the blaze is under way at the 850-year-old Gothic building.

Last year, the Catholic Church in France appealed for funds to save the building, which was crumbling.

A spokesman for the Paris fire department said the next hour and a half was "crucial" in order to determine whether the fire could be contained.

800+ years, two world wars... still standing.

Diversity introduced, catastrophe. Coincidence? Maybe.

So it is either diversity or some idiot was using a powertool through church wiring and the wires smoldered and started this

Doesn't look to be confirmed, but if it is - I hope his insurance premiums are up to date.

Yeah if his insurance covers it they will certainly never insure his company again -- and I doubt any insurer would! If they are found to be the cause the family business is dead.

Couldn't have come at a better time for France. Apparently this will be a five-six year project for rebuilding it and would generate a lot of employment.

you know how the saying goes... never let a good tragedy go to waste. Macron is fked at home and I won't be surprised if he tries to capitalize on this somehow - ignoring how over 800 churches have been damaged (and burnt) over france in the last year

It's also a bit strange how most are saying that it'll take a lot longer - can't remember how long York took to rebuild, but five years and a new spire ?

English Heritage probably wouldn't be too happy with that.

The new spire should be reconstructed as a minaret.
