Hi.
I need to set up my linux Desktop so it is accessible from a remote machine. I'm trying to set up VNC, then pipe that through SSH.

But, no matter what I do (and I've been banging away at this for hours now), KDE will not start. I get a ksplashqml, and krunner crashes right off the bat when connecting, then I'm dropped to a black screen. I have found many articles online that reference black screens and KDE, and black screens with KDE through VNC -- but none of the suggestions that people mentioned have helped me.

In my xstartup file (which has the mode of 775), I have tried:
startkde &
startkde
eval startkde
eval startkde &
exec startkde
exec startkde &
and so on...

I've removed my .kde4, .config and .cache directories, and several files beneath.... no help.

A little info:
Code:
[ebuild   R    ] kde-plasma/plasma-meta-5.14.5:5::gentoo  USE="bluetooth browser-integration consolekit crypt display-manager gtk handbook legacy-systray pam pm-utils pulseaudio sddm wallpapers -elogind -grub -networkmanager -plymouth -sdk -systemd" 0 KiB

Code:
[ebuild   R    ] net-misc/tigervnc-1.9.0-r1::gentoo  USE="drm java nls opengl pam server xinerama xorgmodule -dri3 -gnutls -libressl" 0 KiB

I'm using ssvnc-1.0.29-r2 to try to pull the session on a laptop with the same version of plasma installed.

Just to test something else, I installed lxde on the server machine, and I can pull that, with only one minor complaint, that doesn't seem to affect anything with regard to desktop experience... until something in KDE is launched. Then I get crashes from krunner and plamsma shell, etc. etc.

I'm not sure what I'm missing here. It feels like KDE needs a little more from me than just "startkde", but I cannot figure out what.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

G

OK. I am now piping startkde through vglrun. The interesting thing is, that the errors have all abated -- but I still get only a black screen. Even more interesting is that if I add an "xterm &" to my xstartup, I get a black screen -- with an xterm. So it is an X environment, just without a desktop environment. Even more interesting is taht the screensaver still kicks in after the allotted time, and I can unlock it as normal, but I still return only to a black screen (xterm is still there, if I haven't closed it).

The other weird thing is that I have the vnc server set the screen to 1280x1024... but that is not what I get in my black screen. It looks more like 1024x768. Not sure why. When it first kicks off, it looks like it wants to give me 1280x1024, then quickly changes its mind.

I cannot find any error output anywhere on this... I've tried starting kwin by itself, or kicker... but they do not start.

What the heck am I missing here? I feel like I'm close...

If you do not particularly need VNC then it may be worth looking at X2Go or Xpra

I have used X2go in the past... and it worked... with many caveats. On the whole, I thought VNC provided a better destkop experience, and has better cross-platform support... but... X2go is demonstrating the same behavior with KDE Plasma -- and I know that this used to work.

I don't know anything about Xpra... I'll have to look into that... but I'm thinking it will probably be the same thing...

xpra sounds like a great package. However, xpra doesn't seem to be working... I run into all manner of errors just trying to simply start a server...

It cannot find /run/xrpa/system. So, I make one, and put the mode to 777 (for trouble-shooting purposes). Then it complains about not being able to access the uinput module. So, I recompile my kernel to make sure it is there... it still doesn't like it. Python errors stating that it cannot find the python uinput application... so I look in portage, and that is masked. I unmask it, install it... and it still won't start. It still says it cannot access the python uinput module.

It seems I'm hitting walls everywhere I turn...
