This probably isn't specific to gentoo but after installing it I can't seem to boot my windows partition..
I'm not exactly sure what I did because I've installed gentoo a couple times before with no errors.
Anyway.. the problem is that when I try to boot to windows I get an error: Filesystem type unknown, partition type 0x7.
The partition for windows (2000) is NTFS, but when I look at my partition list with redhat's hardware browser it says that the partition is ext2.
Also, I can mount and view the partition as NTFS with no problems in gentoo... I just can't boot it. |

Go into Gentoo, mount /boot, and change the root () command in /boot/grub/menu.lst under your Windows section to be rootnoverify (). Life should be good then. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

You're solution didn't work.. the only difference now is that I get no error message about the partition type...
Grub just attempts to load /dev/hda1 and stalls there. |

That's the only problem you posted. _________________ I don't believe in witty sigs. |

My intention was to ask for help making it boot.. not getting rid of error messages.
Thanks though. |

You have the line in menu.lst which states chainloader +1, right? I only ask because I was typing faster than my brain one day and forgot to put it in there. Ended up with exactly the behavior you're describing. |

The rootnoverify line is needed to boot NTFS...at least with my WinXP.
Code: | title=Windows
rootnoverify (hd0,0)
chainloader +1 |
Update: Sorry, didn't realize this was said already. Ignore.

what partition is winXP on?
you need grub to look thier
title=windows
rootnoverify (hdx,y)
chainloader +1
x is the drive number in order of how they are hooked up,
the first drive is 0 and second is 1, etc
y is the partition number,
partition 1 would be a 0, partition 2 would be a 1(hda1=0 hda2=1)
so if XP is on the first drive, fourth partition, then (hd0,3)
try that. |

Are you sure you didn't wipe out your win2k partion while installing gentoo? Seems kind of funny that it would show up as a ext2. |

My grub was set up correctly...
Also the partition wasn't erased because I could still mount it.
Anyway, I gave up, mounted and copied all my important files and now am reinstalling windows.
Thanks for the help though. |
