I encounter the problem that when I try to load the algif_skcipher linux kernel module that I get an error message (so the modules is not loaded):
Code:
# modprobe algif_skcipher
modprobe: ERROR: could not insert 'algif_skcipher': Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

Looking at dmesg, I see
Code:
[  293.935122] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_wmem_wakeup (err -2)
[  293.935181] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol sock_kzfree_s (err -2)
[  293.935231] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_async_cb (err -2)

[  293.935381] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol sock_kmalloc (err -2)
[  293.935430] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_release (err -2)
[  293.935478] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_free_resources (err -2)
[  293.935528] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol sock_kfree_s (err -2)
[  293.935578] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_alloc_areq (err -2)
[  293.935631] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_sendmsg (err -2)
[  293.935683] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_wait_for_data (err -2)
[  293.935735] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_poll (err -2)
[  293.935780] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_release_parent (err -2)
[  293.935824] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_unregister_type (err -2)
[  293.935869] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_get_rsgl (err -2)
[  293.935918] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol sock_no_ioctl (err -2)
[  293.935967] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_count_tsgl (err -2)
[  293.936012] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_register_type (err -2)
[  293.936061] algif_skcipher: Unknown symbol af_alg_sendpage (err -2)

I do not know how to find out what is wrong. Would anyone be able to help me resolve this issue?

I assumed that if I generate the kernel config using make menuconfig and use modprobe for kernel loading, all the necessary dependencies would be taken care of. But I seem to be mistaken.

Sometimes you can get away with building a module and inserting it without kernel rebuild and reboot. Sometimes not.

Well, this is all after a reboot, so that should not be the problem.

You rebuilt the kernel and you installed it? It sure looks like you are not running the new kernel.

Code:
uname -v

You hit the nail on the head! Thank you for being persistent.
(I have multiple boot partitions due to a disk migration and had updated the wrong one.)
