|
|
The "Installing the Gentoo installation files" chapter of the Handbook https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Installation/Stage#MAKEOPTS states about `MAKEOPTS`:
Quote: | A good choice is the number of CPUs (or CPU cores) in the system plus one, but this guideline isn't always perfect. |
The "/etc/portage/make.conf" Wiki article https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki//etc/portage/make.conf#MAKEOPTS states:
Quote: | A widely used rule of thumb for N is to take the number of available logical CPU cores. A physical CPU core employing a X-way SMT technique (eg. Hyper-Threading or SMT2) counts as X logical cores. |
The "MAKEOPTS" Wiki article https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/MAKEOPTS states:
Quote: | The recommended value is the number of logical processors in the CPU. [...] Another item to consider is RAM usage. Recent gcc versions have been known to take 1 GB to 1.5 GB of RAM per job. If the system has the 8 logical CPUs from the previous example, but only 4 GB RAM, the MAKEOPTS value should be lowered to -j3. This is so that the system has RAM to run the basics as well as compile without hitting swap very often slowing things down. |
IMHO the Handbook chapter should be updated, to include current recommendations about logical processors and memory usage. |

lucatrv,
Welcome to Gentoo.
The handbook is protected on the Wiki, so you can't update it yourself.
You can make an entry in the talk page, then the wiki will email the people who can change the handbook. _________________ Regards,
