Hi,
I have been away from gentoo for a long time and have decided now to come back and install it on my new build, I have built a successful system based on the default x64 profile, I know want to compile Xorg and Nvidia for use with i3.
After reading the wikis I am a little unsure on how to proceed, and wondered if someone could check the steps I’m looking at taking:
1) set system profile to 17.0/amd64/desktop
2) update system based on new profile
3) add Nvidia video card reference to make.conf
4) emerge Xorg
Am I right in thinking with the video card set it should auto build Nvidia?
Also I’m using open RC not systemd and I’m using a multi lib system.
Thanks in advance for any help / support |

braz2kuk,
Welcome back. We knew you would come one day, just not when :)
Your points 1..4 Yes ... but ...
You will require a kernel configured to be compatible with nvidia-drivers before nvidia-drivers will actually work.
Xorg alone won't run as it will have noting to do. You need to install a window manager and some applications.
The traditional testing twm, xterm and xclock are not installed by default.
Conversely, its not an error to install a window manager and some applications but no Xorg.
Very few people want that these days but its a valid setup. _________________ Regards,
