Hey guys,
I'm planning to do a GUI install on my Thinkpad T420s using Awesome WM. Since a fully functional DE requires a few additional components, could you guys suggest your favorite combination of login managers/panels/power app/volume app etc for your custom Openbox/Awesome based setups?

This is what I was thinking:

Login/display manager
1)Either SliM or LightDM

WM
1) Awesome and Openbox

File manager (would these automount removable devices)
1) PCmanFM
2) Thunar

Network/WiFi
1) WiCD or
2) Network Manager (I'm not a fan of this but options seems to be limited)

Power manager (never really worked well for me, I'm open to suggestions)
1)XFCE4-power manager
2)KDE power manager

Lock screen /screensaver
1)XScreenSaver or
2)Gnome screen saver

Is there anything else that I should install?

I just use the login prompt followed by startx

WM - i3 or DWM

File Manager - Ranger

Network/Wi-Fi - wpa_supplicant & dhcpcd

Power Management I just suspend on lid close.

Lock screen - slock from suckless.

Volume control I just bind alsa up/down/mute and the mpc play/pause toggle to media keys or whatever is available.

Login is simplified w/startx

WM - i3 for me personally for tiling | Awesome looks great, but is written in LUA which leaves a bit of a learning curve I personally didn't have time for. If you know Lua it seems like a great way to go. Openbox is very well documented, I have just never used.

File Manager - Thunar - Will meet your expectations

Network/Wi-Fi - wpa_supplicant & dhcpcd | As previous poster mentioned this will suffice.

Lock screen - lots of options just google lock screen for whatever WM you go with. I use i3lock

Status Bar - i3status-rs is my preference for ease of use and because it just looks cool | However, you also have Polybar, Tint2, Lemonbar, and XFCE panel works great also.

Volume control, print screen, screen brightness, etc - is all keybinds linked to their operation in the ~/.config of i3 for me and assuming same for other WM.

Also, dont forget a compositor if your into "ricing" transparency etc. I use Compton for this. Sway WM is the new kid on the block and it is based off of Wayland. They have been doing some major revamps and it seems stable if Wayland is your thing
