Hello,

i like to ask whats the current headache - free solution to crypt a harddisk in gentoo/KDE.

I got a storage drive with stuff that i want to be safe from everyone without valid keyphrase. Its a software RAID 1 with two harddrives.
Its mounted as /folder without any system-relevant data and i want it to be auto-mounted after boot. With KDE beeing started i like to have some kind of pop-up that is asking for the keyphrase, without it should not be possible to access the data.

Hassle free, easy to use. Is that possible? :)

Yours

I am running with DM-Crypt for years. Never had a headache and find the setup really straight forward. You will need an initramfs. I am using Genkernel for that without any issues. This page helps with setting things up in Gentoo: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Dm-crypt

When reading what you're trying to do, i would suggest to go full encrypted. If you plan to enter a password after each boot up it would not be such a big difference. The only difference would be the point when you enter the password. It will be right after the kernel has booted up and not in KDE. At least on a full system encryption. You can also encrypt over raids without any issue. The set up could be

- RAID
- 2 partitions on that raid with Boot / Crypt
- LVM in Crypt
- System / Swap / Data / etc. in LVM

For more detailed info on what i am suggesting, you can read up here: https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Dm-crypt/Encrypting_an_entire_system#LVM_on_LUKS

This is also showing a number of different options you might also be able to try.
