https://distrowatch.com/dwres.php?resource=major

IIRC it was previously removed a decade ago or so.

Don't understand "removed a decade ago". Nothing gets removed. The sites about releases (what are they??), and hits (who cares).

They have a page about "major distributions" that Gentoo was on for a long time up until about a decade ago, and now it's been re-added.

DistroWatch is a fine resource for newcomers (or come-back-ers) to get a general view about what's going on. I still find their "init system: not systemd" search filter hilarious. But I really wonder what happened that Gentoo found its way back into the list...

I suppose a distro that is not systemd only, and that push openrc and eudev that other non-systemd distros use, could be seen as major no?
Because now (all?) distros not using systemd depends highly on gentoo's work.

Maybe they realised measuring “popularity” by the frequency of releases a distro puts out is thoroughly idiotic now that 99% of Linux distros now either use calendar-driven schedules or rolling releases.

Maybe some people think there's hope now:

Or maybe all the people using slow arm boards out there need some CFLAGS boost, without the right CFLAGS my board is considerably slower and right now gentoo is the only usable source based distro, package quality in gentoo also improved a lot recently

There was a discussion on one of their recent Distrowatch Weekly articles about what being a "major" distribution means. Maybe they leaned more towards distros that are upstream for many others being a more important factor for those appearing on the list.

Or just maybe, this along with Devuan Conference #1: “THE POWER OF CHOICE” is a forshadowing of a shift in the wind.
