The latest version of Firefox ESR [60.5.0] has issues installing widevine. It tries to install widevine but seems to then get stuck installing it. This means I cannot watch Netflix anymore so have downgraded to 60.4.0. Does anyone know what the issue is?

Also having this issue, the error from firefox was

Code:

[Child 31778, MediaPlayback #3] WARNING: Decoder=7f102edfc3e0 Decode error: NS_ERROR_DOM_MEDIA_FATAL_ERR (0x806e0005) - RefPtr<mozilla::MozPromise<RefPtr<mozilla::MediaTrackDemuxer::SamplesHolder>, mozilla::MediaResult, true> > mozilla::MediaSourceTrackDemuxer::DoGetSamples(int32_t): manager is detached.: file /var/tmp/portage/www-client/firefox-60.5.0/work/firefox-60.5.0/dom/media/MediaDecoderStateMachine.cpp, line 3118

edit: Tried firefox-bin 65.0 and Netflix works there, but still shows the same error so it's not related.

I had the same thought to try Firefox-bin. When I installed Firefox-bin-65.0 and started it using the same profile I use for Firefox-60.5.0 widewine installed without issues and I could watch Netflix shows. So I then installed Firefox-60.5.0 and tried to play Netflix movies and it works as there was no need to install widevine in the profile I use. So I removed Firefox-bin-65.0 and Firefox-60.5.0 widevine is still working. So you can get around the issue.

EDIT: After sometime Firefox-60.5.0 tried to installing widevine and got stuck. So I reinstalled Firefox-bin-65.0 and installed widevine into my profile and I could watch Netflix in Firefox-60.5.0 again. I realised that Firefox and Firefox-bin are installing 2 different versions of widevine, so I don't know if that has something to do with it. Firefox-bin is installing widevine 4.10.1196.0 and Firefox is installing widevine version 1.4.8.1008.

So to resolve this issue what I did was:
1. Install Firefox-60.5.0
2. Start Firefox to create default profile and login into Netflix to initiative installation of Widevine 1.4.8.1008, which crashes.
3. Close Firefox
4. Install Firefox-bin-65.0
5. Start Firefox-bin to login into Netflix to initiative installation of Widevine 4.10.1196.0 into the previously created default profile by Firefox
6. Close Firefox-bin
7. Go into the gmp-widevinecdm folder in default Firefox profile folder:
Code:
cd ~/.mozilla/firefox/*.default/gmp-widevinecdm

8. The contents this folder should now have 2 folders, one for each version of Widevine:
    1.4.8.1008
    4.10.1196.0

9. Go into 1.4.8.1008 folder:
Code:
cd 1.4.8.1008

10. Remove contents of folder:
Code:
rm *

11. Create symlinks to files in Widevine version 4.10.1196.0 folder:
Code:
ln -s ../4.10.1196.0/libwidevinecdm.so libwidevinecdm.so
Code:
ln -s ../4.10.1196.0/LICENSE.txt LICENSE.txt
Code:
ln -s ../4.10.1196.0/manifest.json manifest.json

12. Start Firefox, and the add-ons manager should show Widevine version 1.4.8.1008 is installed and shows on Netflix should play without issues.
13. Remove Firefox-bin-65.0

That seems like a tremendous amount of work for such a simple goal. Wouldn't it be better to not use Widevine at all, instead of doing that elaborate dance?

The quicker method would be to download Wideverion version 1.4.9.1088 from here:
https://redirector.gvt1.com/edgedl/widevine-cdm/1.4.9.1088-linux-x64.zip
Extract it to the gmp-widevinecdm folder in the default Firefox profile folder and create symlinks to the files from the 1.4.8.1008 folder. This way you do not need to install and remove FIrefox-bin.

Hu your comment is not helpful unless you have another way of watching Netflix shows as the aim of this is to be able to watch them.

I would have thought that after so many years Netflix would have a better solution for watching on computers. We've had working players for a variety of video file formats available for all major platforms for years, so it's rather silly that they're still screwing around with something that is so finicky and prone to breakage.
