I used the following guide to create my own linux router: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Home_router
It works great, but lately it has lost the WAN connection out of the blue.
My Lan still worked, I could still stream samba on my LAN - using VLC for video.
I came home from work and was unable to ping 8.8.8.8 on the box, none of my clients could either.
I tried restarting dhcpd, dnsmasq, tried restarting both the lan and the wan
iptables weren't blocking any thing
The only fix was to reboot my machine.
I have no idea where to look for the cause on why this happened, its the 2nd time within 3 weeks this has happened.
Can someone point me in the right direction, I don't even know if the syslog-ng logs would have anything.
I save all my syslog-ng files in: /var/log/backups/[date]/[hour] format. So far nothing is turning up when I use the following:
cat */* | grep -v enp4s0 | grep -v enp0s10 | grep -v wlp5s0 | grep error | grep -v "/var/log"
just a bunch of errors of smtp not being able to find googles smtp servers |

It sounds like your ISP dropped service. You should be able to ping 8.8.8.8
Is this cable internet? Do the lights on your cable modem look OK?
I can access my cable modem's web interface on xxxxxx (see below)
There I can see signal levels and view it's log.
EDIT: CORRECTION 198.168.0.1 is the router.
http://192.168.100.1/ is the cable modem. |

At the time yes all the lights looked normal on the modem itself I have 5 lights the pattern was Green Blue, B, G, B
I was unable to ping 8.8.8.8.
Could this be a leasing problem with Comcast?
Why would a reboot of my "Linux Router" fix the problem?
Is there a way around the reboot? |

Can you get to the router log by the ip address I gave? Comcast may be using a different address. When my sister had Comcast they supplied (demanded actually) a combo router-modem-telephone adapter. It had a Class B address rather than a Class C address. |
