So given that the Gentoo forums is still on phpBB 2 and the world has moved on to things like fancy smart phones that can run so much javascript it's not funny anymore, are there plans in the pipeline to have at least a mobile view of the forums so we can browse it on a phone screen? _________________ thinkMoult - I write articles online. Progress is being made on an upgrade. Which of course requires planning, testing, coordination and scheduling of available time for those involved. There is no date, but I doubt those involved want to make it a career :). _________________ Quis separabit? Quo animo? |

One other thing about responsive design: it's really hard to get right. When I go to a site for technical information, involved discussions, in-depth news articles--or indeed anything with lots of text--I want to see great portions of that text in view at once. Desktop monitors are really good at this, laptop screens a bit less so, and tablet screens even less so. On phone-sized screens, it's a test of patience. Even with the font size readably large enough and good word wrapping so as to avoid horizontal scrolling, the phone screen is painful for that kind of reading.
Now what do you get in the typical implementation of a site using Bootstrap or whatever other toolkit that makes things responsive? Yes, you get rid of horizontal scrolling on all devices, but you also get text that is so cartoonishly large so you can read it on your phone while driving and makes your desktop monitor look like it's a two-square-foot sheet ripped from a billboard. In either case you lose something really valuable: being able to see more of the text at a glance.
The other problem with those solutions is that they usually depend on large Javascript libraries that take a long time load, hurt the performance of the browser, and take up lots of memory.
CSS3 offers some hope of a better solution, but browser support is still in flux. That leaves us with the UI toolkits.
On a site like the Gentoo Forms, with its technical information and discussions, any redesign has to proceed with caution. |
