My configuration-
Login manager - lightdm
Desktop Environment - gnome

I was looking at the xorg guide here - https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Guide
Does startx run even if I use lightdm?
If not, will the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-monitor.conf work?

In the setting the screen resolution section,
What is the identifier "RadeonHD 4550"? Can I put anything I want there?
What are the option - "Monitor-DVI-0" "DVI screen" ? My monitor is eDP1. How would mine look?

Hello,

if you use startx to launch Xorg, it's because you are already connected to the system via a Linux virtual terminal, right? Than you don't need a Display Manager to login. Lightdm will not be execute unless you do it yourself. What you need is to have is an .xinitrc file at the root of your user account where you specify stuff that startx will execute. Basically you need

Code:
exec gnome-session

if you want startx to launch Gnome. About the configuration of Xorg, unless you know what you do, you are better to let Xorg use it's default configuration. It is generally good enough. startx use the Xorg configuration as it is when it start including the .conf files in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/.

I personnally prefer a display manager as a service at boot time over startx. It launch everything you need for an X session.

I'd rather use lightdm over startx.
My question is - Would the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/40-monitor.conf still be executed? Or is a startx specific file?

It should still be read - it's an Xorg configuration file and you're still starting Xorg even if you use a login manager to do so.
