The Gentoo wiki page for xfce states - "In order to have the best experience, the basic desktop profile should be chosen which has many of the common settings XFCE needs."
I am currently on the 17.0/systemd profile. Would selecting the 17.0/desktop profile for installing xfce remove my systemd configuration? - I want to continue using systemd.

Also this might be a bit vague. Are there any desktop environments I should avoid for Gentoo? Are there any desktop environments that are easier to get working on Gentoo? (Considering a systemd setup)

To be honest, I did not quite understand how I would need to configure my system after reading the Combining_profiles section. So I moved down to the Creation custom profiles section.

There was no local.conf in /etc/portage/repos.conf/ -> I created it and set it up as shown.
There was no repos directory in /var/db/ so I created the required /var/db/repos/local/profiles/repo_name as shown.
I also created /var/db/repos/local/metadata/layout.conf as shown.
Ran ls -ld /var/db/repos/local .

Did
Code:
user $profile_name=plasma-hardened
user $cd /var/db/repos/local/profiles && mkdir $profile_name && cat <<EOF >$profile_name/parent
> gentoo:default/linux/amd64/17.0/desktop/plasma/systemd
> gentoo:default/linux/amd64/17.0/hardened
> EOF

replacing desktop/plasma/systemd with systemd and replacing hardened with desktop.
Also naming profile_name=systemd-desktop

Ran echo `portageq envvar ARCH` $profile_name dev >profiles.desc

But there was no local:systemd-desktop in eselect profile list.

Did I do something wrong?

You can post output of follow commands?
Code:
$ ls /var/db/repos/local/profiles
$ cat /var/db/repos/local/profiles/systemd-desktop/parent
$ cat /var/db/repos/local/profiles/profiles.desc
$ cat /var/db/repos/local/profiles/repo_name
$ cat /var/db/repos/local/metadata/layout.conf
$ cat /etc/portage/repos.conf/local.conf

I have switched to the desktop/gnome/systemd profile (I know not xfce but I am equally happy with gnome) so this issue is not as relevant anymore. However I did not delete any of the configuration I had done to get xfce working so the files still exist.

cat /var/db/repos/local/profiles/systemd-desktop/parent - https://paste.pound-python.org/show/08wHviijh2HCu75MtoQG/
cat /var/db/repos/local/profiles/profiles.desc - https://paste.pound-python.org/show/MusvMGCLw5cTmMQwAHaM/
cat /var/db/repos/local/profiles/repo_name - local (It was taking too long to wgetpaste for some reason)
cat /var/db/repos/local/metadata/layout.conf - https://paste.pound-python.org/show/kDboZlEp3z1qF30GNkjq/
cat /etc/portage/repos.conf/local.conf - https://paste.pound-python.org/show/SdCl3ANnMjCfOot5hu6R/

The problem is this file because content should be
Code:
amd64 systemd-desktop dev

Probably command echo `portageq envvar ARCH` $profile_name dev >profiles.desc is failed for some reason

That worked.
Thanks!
