I hope I am not making this too long and winded.

I recently Installed Gentoo with Gnome. I had some issues specifically compiling one of the packages, but I got it sorted out by increasing memory available to the Virtual Box.

I finally have gnome working, but when I tried opening the gnome terminal it never did anything. I did some searching and found that if I do Ctrl - Alt - F1 I could type the command directly:

so i tried:
gnome-terminal

and it returned:
Failed to parse arguments: Cannot open display:

I did a bunch of googlin' and found that the following command

echo $DISPLAY

does not return anything.

Furthermore most of the topics I read were people trying to SSH into the machines. I am not, I am on the physical, virtualbox, machine itself.

Can you point me in the right direction and specifically which documentation I should have looked at or why this was a problem in the first place.

I followed most of the steps from the amd64 handbook, when I gave up because it was an OpenRC installation and apparently gnome is only supported through systemd so I started over and used the following this manual for the remainder of the installation:

Try set correct locale settings
edit file /etc/locale.gen to uncomment lines with your desired locales
run locale-gen
run eselect locale set en_US.utf8

yes! this worked. I thought I did that when I ran these sequences of commands when I first Installed the computer:

root #ln -sf /proc/self/mounts /etc/mtab

root #localectl list-keymaps

root #localectl set-keymap --no-convert fr-dvorak-bepo

root #cat /etc/vconsole.conf

but importantly if my locale wasn't selected can you tell me what else could have been affected by the missing locale settings.

I remember doing this when following the AMD64 handbook, but I scrapped it so I could follow the other set instructions primarily for Gnome, these:
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Systemd/Installing_Gnome3_from_scratch

That being said should I rerun those commands? Or do I need to rebuild all of my previous packages or some of them. I've kinda been going at this one step at a time, but there is so much to know and learn and it gets overwhelming.

I am glad seeing it helped you. I got it from an Arch users forum long time ago. The root cause is gnome-terminal could not find correct trans-table or lang definitions for glibc. So running locale-gen is to cure that problem.
