slalom,
With 2G RAM, may be a bit aggressive.
C++, can take up to 2G RAM per C++ instance.
Your | Code: | | ../../mspecs/linux-g++ -o .obj/qwindow.o kernel/qwindow.c | is a C++ compiler running.
Its probably not frozen, just doing a lot of swapping, so its very slow.
When you run out of real RAM and swap, the Out Of Memory manager will kick in and kill something. Often a compile task.
What package was building when this happened?
As a test, run | Code: | | MAKEOPTS="-j1" emerge <package/atom> -1av |
where <package/atom> is the build that is failing. Make will only run a single thread but it will be faster than swapping.
This is only a test. Portage can be configured with MAKEOPTS="-j3" in make.conf and a per package override of MAKEOPTS="-j1".
If this solves your problem, I'll point out how to set that up. _________________ Regards,

slalom,
I have dev-qt/qtgui installed and I don't have aes.
My | Code: | | CPU_FLAGS_X86="3dnow 3dnowext mmx mmxext popcnt sse sse2 sse3 sse4a" | Thats on a 10 year old Phenom II.
Why do you use rather than -march=native?
Not obviously related but why do you use | Code: | | CPU_FLAGS_X86="mmx mmxext sse sse2" |
Is that from app-portage/cpuid2cpuflags ?
What does | Code: | | gcc -### -E - -march=native 2>&1 | sed -r '/cc1/!d;s/(")|(^.* - )|( -mno-[^\ ]+)//g' | show?
It tells what -march=native really means on your system. _________________ Regards,

Nothing.
I changed -march=native and add | Code: | | CPU_FLAGS_X86="avx mmx mmxext pclmul popcnt sse sse2 sse3 sse4-1 sse4_2 ssse3" |
But the error persists. |

slalom,
Nothing? That's odd. I get
| Code: | $ gcc -### -E - -march=native 2>&1 | sed -r '/cc1/!d;s/(")|(^.* - )|( -mno-[^\ ]+)//g'
-march=amdfam10 -mmmx -m3dnow -msse -msse2 -msse3 -msse4a -mcx16 -msahf -mpopcnt -mabm -mlzcnt -mprfchw -mfxsr --param l1-cache-size=64 --param l1-cache-line-size=64 --param l2-cache-size=512 -mtune=amdfam10 |
If | Code: | | CPU_FLAGS_X86="avx mmx mmxext pclmul popcnt sse sse2 sse3 sse4-1 sse4_2 ssse3" | was produced by app-portage/cpuid2cpuflags, you don't have aes extensions in you CPU. Neither do I and it installs here.
When the build failed, it will have told you where the build log was. Please put the build log onto a pastebin site and post the link.
Its too big for a post. _________________ Regards,

FWIW, I was having the same problem on my Core i5 430M, 8GB RAM. I just added a few things to my USE_FLAGS variable, namely "-qt5 -qt4 -qt3" because qt seemed to be really messing with my system. But, that doesn't really solve the problem, per se |

I'm actually having the exact same problem, except with the package qtsensors. I followed your steps, and even got the same issue that my processor is incompatible since the Qt build requires aes
| NeddySeagoon wrote: | What does | Code: | | gcc -### -E - -march=native 2>&1 | sed -r '/cc1/!d;s/(")|(^.* - )|( -mno-[^\ ]+)//g' | show?
It tells what -march=native really means on your system. | returns | Code: | | -march=westmere -mmmx -msse -msse2 -msse3 -mssse3 -mcx16 -msahf -mpopcnt -msse4.2 -msse4.1 -mfxsr --param l1-cache-size=32 --param l1-cache-line-size=64 --param l2-cache-size=3072 -mtune=westmere | I posted the last few lines where it failed HERE along with 'emerge --info'. A note about that, you'll see that once it tells me my processor is incompatible, it just hangs and I have to do a CTRL+C to stop the process. It never tells me where the build log is. Also, I'm not sure why the ACCEPT_KEYWORDS line has both amd64 and ~amd64. In /etc/portage/make.conf, it's just ~amd64.
Oddly, it only halts there during | Code: | | MAKE_OPTS="-j1" emerge -a qtsensors |
During | Code: | | emerge --ask --update --newuse --deep --with-bdeps=y @world | it somehow continues for a while, and eventually halts at this step: | Code: | x86_64-pc-linux-gnu-g++ -c -march=native -O2 -pipe -std=c++1z -fvisibility=hidden -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -fno-exceptions -Wall -W -Wvla -Wdate-time -Wshift-overflow=2 -Wduplicated-cond -Wno-stringop-overflow -D_REENTRANT -fPIC -DQT_DEPRECATED_WARNINGS -DQT_NO_NARROWING_CONVERSIONS_IN_CONNECT -DQT_NO_EXCEPTIONS -D_LARGEFILE64_SOURCE -D_LARGEFILE_SOURCE -DQT_NO_DEBUG -DQT_PLUGIN -DQT_SENSORS_LIB -DQT_DBUS_LIB -DQT_CORE_LIB -I. -I../../../../include -I../../../../include/QtSensors -isystem /usr/include/qt5 -isystem /usr/include/qt5/QtDBus -isystem /usr/include/qt5/QtCore -I.moc -I/usr/lib64/qt5/mkspecs/linux-g++ -o .obj/moc_iiosensorproxyorientationsensor.o .moc/moc_iiosensorproxyorientationsensor.cpp

According to these people adding the -mno-aes flag to CFLAGS solved the problem. For me, I unmerged the package requiring qtsensors (sci-mathematics/rstudio) and am rebuilding. I'll re-merge it once (if) the update runs.
UPDATE: Ha - now I'm stuck almost exactly where you are: compiling qtgui and it sticks at qwindow.cpp instead of qwindow.c
