I am building a system based on 1.2 for a friend. All went very well, except that mplayer fails on the emerge. Errors already occur right in the beginning where a commandline for gcc has the wrong order, but it gows on and then "fails without an error"
After the emerge fails I can go into the work directory , type make, make install and it will compile and install fine. Something with the new portage versions? Is it now focussed on gcc 3 perhaps?
Any way I tried everything upto minimal CFLAGS etc.
I can post the output of emerge, but it is quite long. I will upon request!

Maybe something in your USE= statements? You can try "USE=-*" I think to disable all the default USE statements and then add your own.
