I did it a couple of years ago. Just for shit and giggles. Worked better than expected.

Emacs was the editor I learned perfectly first. It's so feature rich that you could theoretically just use it for nearly all of your work.

While I did switch to Vim, I am still partial to nano.

Once you go down the emacs rabbit-hole though... Jesus... it's like how it probably felt to be a Greek taken hostage by the Scythians.

Apparently I find $mod+Shift+q way too easy to unintentionally do.

Has anyone remapped it to something else?

A nagbar that didn't require mouse input would be nice.

Trying $mod+Shift+z. That seems awkward enough.

Have you tried reassigning it? FAQ section on keybindings.

I'm very used to that pattern to be "kill window", so I never looked into changing it.

You can change the mod+shift+e to just be exit, getting rid of the nagbar.

Speaking of Amish of the nix world, what do you think would be the name of the most absolutely primitive, anti-technology sect?

I do that pattern when meaning to do something else, though I'm not 100% sure what. Usually I end up killing the browser, losing all my current tabs. Fortunately I've done it enough now that I try to minimize how many I have open. After upgrading the browser, it was incompatible with most plugins, so I lost tab and session management. I was hoping to find a different browser, but wow, the options are poor. I did remap it to z and haven't done it since, but I was only doing it about once per week or so. Hopefully that's solved.

Muso wrote:

I did that very early on. I was thinking of the nagbar but with keyboard confirmation instead of mouse confirmation. Fortunately I don't accidentally exit i3, which I remapped to x instead of e. I'll probably have to move kill from z to something else.

Dwm and Dwmers? Whatever the name, they'd be afraid of configuration files that weren't part of the compiled code.

Actually for very low end systems (RPi) I've started to use lf as a ranger replacement.

Still need to dig into the configuration but I'm liking this, thanks.

I'm assuming the rodent they refer to is the mouse?

Loving the original usenet post.

Amiga OS is the best OS and workbench of all times! 8)

It was my first decent computer back in the time when only the DOS was in existence for a PC and even the Mac was in black & white and making pathetic bip bip into a buzzer like speaker. After using it, I know why some peoples prefer to use a console like workbench instead of a full featured wm on linux. This is because at the exception of fvwm, no one single wm on linux is able to provide a convenient and complete way to configure the focus policy of the mouse, which imply the end user ends up with windows popping up and down in all directions and at any times. And even with fvwm, it will always be some software thinking they know better than the wm how the wm want to manage their windows.

Hah! Right on intermittent schedule, ~24 days. I thought that combo might be too close if initially a bit awkward.

You do realize that Amiga OS was the product of profit-seeking capitalist pigs, don't you? They even moved the purported "headquarters" offshore to the Bahamas to avoid paying taxes. Doh!

I've FINALLY figured out the problem: Ctrl + Q. A Firefox shortcut, which seem to be poorly chosen:
Code:
Close Tab    Ctrl + W ; Ctrl + F4
Close Window    Ctrl + Shift + W ; Alt + F4
Quit    Ctrl + Q
But that's only part of the problem. In preferences, I've set "Show your windows and tabs from last time", but that doesn't happen. Apparently it relies on browsing history for "sessions." They've really turned FF into garbage.

FFS, would have never thought that firefox bindings were an issue.

I stand corrected.

You people are all a bunch of dinosaurs. The rest of the world has moved on to AI-assisted voice interface tied into an array of a dozen physical sensors. Meanwhile, you're like, $mod+Shift+Z what happened I'm confused.

$mod+Shift+Z is faster.

Not if you count the 300 hours you spent fucking around with your configuration files and watching shit scroll by.
