What version of dev-games/physfs you installed?
If is stable version 2.x.x you tried with unstable 3.x.x?

EDIT: tested on my system with dev-games/physfs-3.0.1-r1 supertux compile fine

I do indeed have physfs-2.0.3-r2 (stable) installed. I didn't think to check the bugzilla, apologies for the wasted time and wasted space on the servers.

I've just now posted solution in bugzilla

Ah, that escaped me.
I'm guessing the ebuild should be modified to reflect the dependency.

As a side note, I've had a similar problem with games-fps/eduke32 failing to build with default USE flags but builds fine with media-libs/sdl2-mixer flac and vorbis enabled despite those two flags NOT being enabled on the eduke32 package itself. Mind you, Portage doesn't let you proceed without midi and one of fluidsynth or timidity on sdl2-mixer, none of which are on by default, which should be the behaviour if the two of flac and vorbis are indeed needed for either package. The USE flags and/or dependencies for that ebuild seem to be broken in general... Time for a bug report! :D
