Creating a new post here since https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-1077262-highlight-.html is marked solved, which might be confusing.

To recap, any version of sddm above 0.15.0 is not working but there are no errors in any logs we can see.

The sddm service starts, but does nothing (not starting X).
The logs in journalctl are very sparse and do not indicate a problem.
Code:

Sep 02 13:54:39 gentux systemd[1]: Started Simple Desktop Display Manager.
Sep 02 13:54:40 gentux sddm[502]: Initializing...
Sep 02 13:54:40 gentux sddm[502]: Starting...
Sep 02 13:54:40 gentux sddm[502]: Logind interface found

I am using nvidia proprietary drivers but the issue seems to also affect Radeon users.

Any pointers on where to look or how to debug would help.

Hi, sddm-0.17.0-r4 and 0.18.0 works here fine.

Just a idea, when I remember correctly I set with sddm-0.17.0
in
/etc/sddm.conf:
[General]
InputMethod=""
for disabling the new default enabled qtvirtualkeyboard (see https://github.com/sddm/sddm/releases/tag/v0.17.0 )
I'm not sure is this your issue, but probably the new qtvirtualkeyboard is not compatible with all themes.

Thanks for the suggestion Josef, but this did not resolve the issue for me.

I pretty much have a vanilla config containing:
Code:

[General]
InputMethod=

I should be looking at what changed between 0.15.0 and 0.16.0 although the diff is quite large:

I'd like to point out that sddm-0.17.0-r4 works perfectly well here utilizing elogind (up to the upcoming v239) and using intel drivers. I have a hybrid laptop, so after I have upgraded sddm to 0.18.0, I may test using nvidia-drivers directly.

Marking as Solved-ish as a reinstall is clearly not a great solution

I have exactly the same situation with sddm doing nothing (not even going to to change to vt7) after move to elogind on one of my desktops, though on my laptop, and seemingly second desktop, everything works fine.

I use sddm-0.18.0

There was a bug https://bugs.gentoo.org/649888 with similar symptoms filed against sddm-0.16.0, but it was supposed to be fixed in sddm-0.17 .

One thing that helps is to ensure that elogind is not running before launching sddm. Then sddm finds no session manager and starts, while elogind is launched via dbus automatically
after that.
