|
|
Good day everyone.
I have some strange things happening: once in a while (usually when starting steam or alt-tabing from app to app) my screen goes blank and I get 'no signal detected' from my monitor. Nevertheless, X server is still working (music plays, for instance).
Situation changes after reboot: I see console prompt instead of GUI. startx doesn't work, my Xorg.0.log is submitted at the end of the page. The situation goes back to normal within an hour usually, meaning I can boot my system as usual, but it happens again in a week or so.
I see no logic in this. All I can say is that I can guess normal booting from the grub screen, if it's in a high-res than everything's ok.
I've spent some years using gentoo but all I had was laptop with intel videocard, now it's a PC, not a laptop. I've got singe NVidia GeForce GTX 970 connected via DVI. This gentoo is a fresh install, kernel 4.9.95. NVidia drivers all set as wiki says.
I've tried minimal xorg.conf syntax as specified in wiki but it helped not:
Code: | Section "Device"
Identifier "nvidia"
Driver "nvidia"
EndSection |
Config files and log:
Xorg.0.log
xorg.conf.d/10nvidia.conf
xorg.conf.d/20opengl.conf
I also have 30keyboard.conf written by myself but it specifies only some keyboard options via InputClass section.
I would very much appreciate some advance because it's not normal behavior in slightest. Thanks in advance.

emerge --info
cpuinfo
lspci
I've got two hdds. Second one is a data storage mounted as /mnt/data via fstab. First one hosts Windows 7 (for some specialized software) and gentoo, so
sda1 Windows boot partition
sda2 Windows partition
sda3 2 Mb boot partition
sda4 extended partition
sda5 /home
sda6 /
sda7 swap
GRUB is installed on /dev/sda.
Anything else you need to know? |

The monitor is simply not detected anymore. I'd say either your monitor is dying or the cable is flakey. |

It is possible but both things are brand new.
I'll try it with another cable though. |

Ok, with that info I read your post again and I came across that previously. This is often connected with bad grounding so capacitors in the signal way load over time until protective circuits cut off. This can be either due to bad video cable or the domestic cabling. So using a different cable and maybe even a different connector, if possible, would be your best shot. |

Hm. The thing is, Windows refuses to boot when this things happens. "No signal detected" and all.
I was blaming myself for being inept with NVidia drivers but this can be hardware fault after all.
P.S. Monitor and cable are brand new as I said it, but video card is not. Nor is motherboard. |

Can you test the system (especially the video system) with some software like
UL Benchamrk
https://benchmarks.ul.com/
If this happens also under Windows.
If the system refuses to have video output, it is likely the video card, could also be the mainboard or the cpu. |

I've changed the cable. There are no glitches so far.
I'll close this topic in a month or so.
Thanks all of you. |
