I have my fonts .otf file in
Code:
 ~/.local/share/fonts

What should I put in my .Xresources to use this font? I've tried a number of methods.

Did I understand correctly that you copied fonts to '~/.local/share/fonts' and that you can't use them in urxvt?

Let's check the prerequisites:
  1. Did you call
    Code:
    fc-cache -v

after you copied new fonts to ~/.local/share/fonts?

    Does it scan ~/.local/share/fonts?

  2. Did you compile 'x11-terms/rxvt-unicode' with USE flag 'xft'?

  3. Did you read: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Rxvt-unicode

dendro ... first lookup the name of the font in 'fc-list', then add the following:

~/.Xresources:
URxvt.font:xft:<font name>:pixelsize=<size>

eg:
~/.Xresources:
URxvt.font:xft:droid sans mono slashed:pixelsize=16

Subsequently you need to either restart your xsession, or run 'xrdb -load ~/.Xresources' for changes to come into effect.

Am I doing this right? To recompile urxvt with the xft USE flag I do the following:

Code:
emerge -C x11-terms/rxvt-unicode

Code:
USE="xft"

Code:
emerge --ask x11-terms/rxvt-unicode

I'm trying to use the terminus font which appears to be installed under /usr/share/consolefonts. I also have it installed in /usr/share/fonts/terminus. But still I'm stuck with Cantarell 11 [GTK3].

Did you follow Khay's advice in regards to .Xresources? Have you tested with another font to see whether these are issues with this particular font or your method with setting it?

If the font shows in fc-list, then it is easy to set under .Xresources as suggested above.

dendro ... no, firstly, there is no uneed to -C (unmerge) the package if changing useflags, all you need do is make the useflag change and re-merge. Secondly, what, or where, is USE="xft"? If you're doing this on the command line then that variable is only applied on that line, and in the case of portage you want this set for either every package with an 'xft' useflag (and so in make.conf) or specifically set for this package (and so via package.use), eg:

/etc/portage/package.use:
x11-terms/rxvt-unicode xft
