System doesn't boot. Stuck at "Booting the kernel"

Having problems with the Gentoo Handbook? If you're still working your way through it, or just need some info before you start your install, this is the place. All other questions go elsewhere.

System doesn't boot. Stuck at "Booting the kernel"

Hi, so I'm trying for the first time to install Gentoo and of course, so far my experience has been plagued by problems and I'm getting a bit frustrated...
I've decided to set up a systemd based installation, so I followed the Handbook and integrated the missing pieces by also looking at the wiki page dedicated to systemd, but when I turn on my PC Grub 2 fails to boot the kernel.

Code: Select all

Decompressing Linux... Parsing ELF... Performing relocations... done.
Booting the kernel.
And that's it, it gets stuck there. I want to clarify that my mobo is set in legacy mode so EFI is not the issue and grub-mkconfig correctly found the kernel.

So yeah..that it basically and I don't really know what to do, can somebody give me a hand?
Thank you.

what is the grub or whatever you're using cmd line and what is fstab (or whatever systemd uses for fstab) set as for /root

Edit to add: sounds like it's not finding the /root partition, ie you're pointing to someplace else than the root partition

Probably missing correct drivers or firmware for your GPU. It'd show a panic message if rootfs was missing.

Might be drivers, highly unlikely firmware.

Next would be to view .config file kernel was built from.

Edit to add: having said the above, I am definitely not a systemd guru, as I abhor it.

grub didn't find the kernel or the kernel can't load, rootfs location not pertinent until the kernel has loaded.
