I've used Gentoo since 2004 and I did not mind some hiccups now and again, but in less than
a month another update turned into not a few hours of updating, but days.

I've got dev-libs/icu-58.2-r1 showing masked after two portage updates and yet when I check gentoo.org it is not masked.
And that does not cover the conflicts. I had updated GCC to 7.3.0-r3 and after another update is showed not updated. I'm beginning to
think all Gentoo mirrors have been hacked and the work I use to be able to do is no longer possible.

I hate to say good bye, but I must. Thus, I'm looking for recommendations for alternatives that allow me to do audio/video editing and
some related things. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I've learned a lot with Gentoo, but too much time is required to make it work.

I mention Apple as the iOS 11 updates have turned my iPod Touch into almost a coaster. Apple is a great PR machine. They've taken
a page from HG Well's "The Time Machine." I liked the first movie even better as when the Morlocks turn on the sirens the Eloi blindly
become dinner. Apple owners are exactly the same.

Edit: When was Gentoo hacked? Anyone know?

TIA

I was told on #gentoo on IRC though that they praefer that you sync against that one because it saves gentoo bandwidth basically.

proxy maintainers whom the devs don't want to give git access. (edit: access to the main git repo that feeds the rsync mirrors, that is)

I've heard it's so they can take pull requests from people with only a github account. Or without a clue.

After completing a full install in which I used SystemRescue rather than the Gentoo
CD(Yes, I know SystemRescue is based on Gentoo) I did a stage3 install.

I think that amd64 handbook is due some editing, but I think the biggest problem
was KDE Plasma. Though I've liked it I moved to XFCE4 for a more light weight
desktop and more stability. Not as pretty, красавица! but it does most of what I need,
though I'll need to tweak it as my icons are not displaying properly.

I should be careful that I do not paint Gentoo due to KDE problems, though I'm
concerned about the security.

Erm. Not much of your first post makes sense, and nothing of it is related to KDE Plasma? This thread is puzzling.

That's a misunderstanding. There's two places here:
github.com/gentoo - the working mirror for Pull Requests - still, nothing is actually pulled from there, it is push only, so the 'real' gentoo.git was not in danger. No one was/is advised to pull from there. This one got compromised by the hacked account.
github.com/gentoo-mirror - the git mirror people may pull from, with metadata generation, and after CI checks (so QA issues on gentoo.git do not reach the users). This one was never compromised.
