Chema Alonsa Josa has marked the urlview package to be masked because upstream is dead. What is its replacement?

Code:
sh-4.4# emerge -DaquN --with-bdeps=y @world

!!! The following installed packages are masked:
- net-misc/urlview-0.9::gentoo (masked by: package.mask)
/usr/portage/profiles/package.mask:
# Chema Alonso Josa <nimiux@gentoo.org> (28 May 2018)
# Upstream is dead.
# Masked for removal in 30 days. Bug #646118

For more information, see the MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge
man page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.

Nothing to merge; quitting.

sh-4.4# emerge --search urlscan

gary_uk ...

urlscan ... but you seem to know that. As you can see it's not in the tree, but it looks like it wouldn't be too much problem to write an ebuild. I may do that at some point in the coming weeks, bug me if that doesn't happen.

best ... khay

Thanks Khay. Perhaps it would therefore be a good idea _not_ to mark urlview as masked until a urlscan ebuild is in the tree?

gary_uk ... I'm not a developer, so I have no say in the matter.

As noted in the mentioned bug #646118, app-text/extract-url is an alternative that is already in the tree.

While that would be nice when feasible, if the existing package is already broken (fails to build on all major platforms, or source is missing, or always fails to run, etc.) then leaving it in tree is a disservice to people who would see it and expect it to work. It's better to mask a clearly broken package, even if it has no replacement, than to let users see it, try it, and file new problem reports that it is broken.

In addition to what radhermit and Hu have already mentioned, if for some reason you do need that specific package and it does still, somehow, build and run properly for you, and you already have the sources, just stick it in an overlay and unmask it. Problem solved for you, problems averted for others.
