Once upon time I set up LIRC and it worked for a long time. Then I abandoned it for some wireless input device. Now I have this Intel NUC here with built in IR receiver. I see in dmesg I succeeded enabling correct driver for it. Is LIRC still alive? Or there is some other way to use IR input? Usually my google-fu helps me out, but after studying Gentoo and Arch wikis I'm still in dark. Also I remember reading somewhere there are issues with LIRC and modern Linux kernels. Confusing stuff.
Does anyone know an idiots guide to IR which is still valid in 2018?
Edit: I rebuilt Kodi with USE=cec, what do you know, I do not need this remote control any more ... _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

gosh, that's a blast from the past. apparently pgo says the package is still around... https://packages.gentoo.org/packages/app-misc/lirc
back when i tried using it with mythtv some years ago it seemed to work but i never got around to assigning the remote keys to anything. it basically acts like a keyboard without unassigned keys. _________________

Well, there has to be a way to use this IR input.
Code: | [ 1.209760] ite_cir: Auto-detected model: ITE8713 CIR transceiver
[ 1.209767] ite_cir: Using model: ITE8713 CIR transceiver
[ 1.209772] ite_cir: TX-capable: 1
[ 1.209775] ite_cir: Sample period (ns): 8680
[ 1.209778] ite_cir: TX carrier frequency (Hz): 38000
[ 1.209782] ite_cir: TX duty cycle (%): 33
[ 1.209785] ite_cir: RX low carrier frequency (Hz): 0
[ 1.209788] ite_cir: RX high carrier frequency (Hz): 0
[ 1.209837] Registered IR keymap rc-rc6-mce
[ 1.209967] rc_core: Couldn't load IR protocol module ir-rc6-decoder
[ 1.210016] rc rc0: ITE8713 CIR transceiver as /devices/virtual/rc/rc0
[ 1.210086] input: ITE8713 CIR transceiver as /devices/virtual/rc/rc0/input4
[ 1.210282] ite_cir: driver has been successfully loaded

This I see in dmesg. I can fix the decoder error, no problem. I'd like to use it without LIRC, but how? It is going to be a rocky road without a good tutorial. I have very vague understanding how these keycodes travel thru different layers and decoders before they reach the application. _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.
