Code:

000055 !!! All ebuilds that could satisfy ">=x11-base/xorg-drivers-9999" have been masked.
000056 !!! One of the following masked packages is required to complete your request:
000057 - x11-base/xorg-drivers-9999::gentoo (masked by: EAPI 7)

I am new to this and not fully accustomed to the use of emerge so I decided to use the lxde DE and use porthole to update and upgrade, but I got the following error.

Lxterminal is also installed but is not working, nor is it giving me an error message once started from another terminal. I use terminator because it was the first terminal I could install that was functional and familiar to me.

The desktop seems to be having rights issues. When I use obconf or lxappearance the settings do not change. The result is the font is too small for me to be able to read without my eyes running.
I installed the desktop because I couldn't take the torture of the console with small fonts.

I don't know whether the above error is related to desktop disfunctionality.

post your full emerge output and emerge --info output. Please specify if you're using any overlays. What USE flags are you using. What make.profile.

Random DE failures usually can be attributed to strange USE flag combinations (some of which include trying to disable consolekit, polkit, and the likes). I don't use lxde but this on the surface appears to be a portage usage issue...

Another possibility is when anything is run as root in users home directory the config files may become unwritable for user, resulting in all kind of weird issues.
