emerge errors installing to zfs

Hi community, Long time linux user and first time Gentoo user.
I've got a media server that I want to run Gentoo with zfs. I've used the Fearedbliss wiki page to help me with this process but I'm having trouble.
I can get everything setup fine, partition my disks for uefi and create my zpool.
After I un tar the stage 3 tarball and mount my disks then chroot into the environment I'm getting an emerge error after I create my make.conf
which I know is perfect.
I get an error about the /usr/portage folder and also about my nvidia card
GRAPHIC_CARDS="nvidia" is what I have in the make.conf
But the error is GRAPHIC_CARDS="nvidia" not ( '_' )
I've tried 4 times and still the same. But if I try to install without using zfs I get no error at all and can emerge perfect.
I've downloaded the Fearedbliss sysrescue cd with zfs pre compiled into it.
So was wondering is there a bug with the newest stage3 tarball when it comes to emerge or is it the file system I'm trying to use?

"which i know is perfect" is a bold statement. unless fearedbliss has their own custom USE_EXPAND variables, you should be using VIDEO_CARDS

Also, he should be posting actual error messages, not paraphrased summaries of errors.
