My mate desktop quit working after a recent world update. What happens is after I run startx the desktop appears as normal for about 1/2 second and then the screen goes completely black.

I can't find any good clues in dmesg, /var/log/messages, or Xorg.0.log.

There is maybe one line in messages that might be a clue but I'm not sure it's a problem

Code:
May 27 14:06:18 AsusTux gnome-keyring-daemon[3194]: couldn't access control socket: /var/run/user/1000/keyring/control: No such file or directory

I can still ssh into the machine after this happens or ctl-alt-F1 to get a text console so it is not locking the machine.

This system was updated about 4-6 weeks after it's previous update. Has anyone else seen this problem or have advice on how to troubleshoot further ?

Ok, by coincidence this now appears to be a hardware problem since I tried out a few other live CDs and experienced tha exact same problem (but memtest86 live CD had no problem, it worked just fine). Also attached an external monitor which worked fine. Never had a display with this failure mode before, hope laptop displays are not too hard to replace.

I will check for loose cables, thanks, but never have seen that on a laptop. This is a laptop with a core i3 and intel integrated graphics, asus model x44. Very strange failure mode.
There appears to be a new display for sale on new egg for around $50. Thanks.

bdx,

Does it work fer the boot loader/UEFI menu?
Is it the display or the backlight?
If its the backlight, is the kernel turning it off?

How to tell.
Look at the screen under a very strong light. Direct sunlight is ideal. You should be able to see a very faint image on the screen by the reflected light.

That it works for a few frames during startup suggests that the LCD is good.
