|
|
Just bought an AMD acer laptop. It don’t have a GUI so it’s hard to paste my X log. The laptop has a Vega Mobile graphics card in it. So I’m trying the amdgpu driver. I’m getting this error when I start up X. Also, the screen flickers and I have to kill X.

Where can I start digging to fix?
Thanks. _________________ Michael

maiku,
Pastebin is your friend.
You need VIDEO_CARDS="amdgpu radeonsi" and a recent kernel.
4.17 might be out by now.
Your lspci output will help too. _________________ Regards,

Was about to post to use the latest version of x11-drivers/xf86-video-amdgpu as well, but seeing that they dropped older versions. On my HP Ryzen based laptop I had to enable secure boot to get the amdgpu drivers to work. |

Upgraded to kernel 4.17. Compiled in the amdgpu as a module. It freezes on boot. When I take out the module it doesn’t freeze. Here is my lspci.

maiku,
Do you have the firmware too?
I'm not sure if its in linux-firmware. Certainly there is raven* in /lib/firmware/amdgpu/ that sounds like its for you.
When you build amdgpu into the kernel, you need to build thu firmware in too.
As a module, amdgpu will look in /lib/firmware/ for its firmware and leave a list of things it can't find in dmesg.
If you can ssh in, you maf find something useful in dmesg.
-- edit --
Have you created an xorg.conf file or added to /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ ?
If so, move those files out of the way and let the auto detection do its thing. _________________ Regards,

Hi All. Thanks for all of the help.
Turns out that under
-> Device Drivers
-> Graphics support
-> Display Engine Configuration
I had to have DCN 1.0 Raven Family selected. Then it stopped freezing.
To get X to work, as neddy suggested, I had to remove my old xorg.conf and let it auto detect. I then later added my touchpad options to the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ directory afterwards. Then it was (mostly) smooth sailing.
Hope this helps somebody else. _________________ Michael |
