A recent update has apparently messed up some adobe fonts. I originally thought this was confined to a single machine, but I find now that it has affected many machines. When I try to start the twm window manager, it fails with:
Code:

baruch ~ # DISPLAY=:1 twm &
[2] 5506
baruch ~ # twm:  unable to open fontset "-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*"

[2]+  Exit 1                  DISPLAY=:1 twm
baruch ~ #

How can I get the missing fonts back? I can't install them by name; they must be part of some installable package somewhere.

I emerged both font packages:
Code:

emerge media-fonts/font-adobe-100dpi  media-fonts/font-adobe-75dpi

I then did the recommended:
Code:

xset fp rehash

but xset was not installed, so I emerged it and ran the above command again with no errors, but when I tried to run twm, I still got:
Code:

baruch ~ # DISPLAY=:1 twm &
[2] 27192
baruch ~ # twm:  unable to open fontset "-adobe-helvetica-bold-r-normal--*-120-*-*-*-*-*-*"

[2]+  Exit 1                  DISPLAY=:1 twm
baruch ~ #

So something has gotten messed up by a recent update. I normally apply updates once a week. The twm window manager normally runs until a reboot is required for whatever reason. I recently had to reboot a machine and afterwards could not start twm bcause of this font problem. I thought is was something unique to that machine, but 2 days ago I had to reboot another machine, and ended up with the same problem. Because twm is normally started when vnc is started, and I use vnc to manage a bunch of headless machines, this is a real problem for me.

I also tried re-emerging twm. Still no good, even thought the emerge went fine.

I was able to work around this problem, not solve it, by switching to ctwm instead of twm.
