Read the history of Rome. Seriously. If you research it, you'll find what I'm saying to be accurate. Except that, I think the Etruscans (Porsinius) did briefly attempt to ban the use of Iron by the Romans, when the Latins started to become trublesome and side with the Greeks against them. By then it was too late, though.

This is exactly what has Trudeau's feathers ruffled. Canada is the friend of the US. Saying we're a national security threat is an insult. I think the whole thing is weird because I travel to the US often. Border security knows who I am so I am not going through extreme vetting at the border these days. I have friends there. Trump is overlooking a lot of good relations to make that bold claim.

How exactly has Canada been such a good friend to the U.S. lately? By refusing to join our coalition in Afghanistan? By refusing to join our coalition in Iraq? By ignoring its historical role in Korea? By being outspokenly critical of the U.S. and it's policies at virtually every opportunity?

We let you keep our Stanley Cup for a while. But pretty soon, we'll take it back. Not this year, but soon. Mark my words. ;)

2,500 troops? That's "fuck you", basically. And you only had that many there briefly.

Ok... but regardless you had said "By refusing to join our coalition in Afghanistan" - that's completely untrue. You may try to contort after the fact that we were somehow supposed to infer that you meant "2500 troops for a brief time is basically refusal", but the fact is you were talking out of your ass.

No. "essentially true" != "completely untrue"

If you ask to borrow your friend's car, and he says, "Here, I'll give you a skateboard", it's not "completely untrue" that he has essentially refused your request. He might argue, "But it's got four wheels, and you can use it to get places!", so therefore I actually fulfilled your request in good faith, as appropriate to our strong and lasting friendship. But he'd be full of shit.

And even your bestest allies will be hesitant send ships off to get torpedoed and sunk to the bottom of the ocean.

But how does that apply to the US and Canada? Canada and the US are about as tight as you can get. If war broke out, it almost certainly won't be between canada and the US, and having a cheap supply of steal from Canada would help. It likely would not be disrupted.

How could you? Trump doesn't know either.

Fairly sure the US and UK is much tighter in terms of allyship, and I'm sure the US is happy that they export a good bit more to the UK than import, and would certainly be tighter still in terms of trade volume if they hadn't been stuck with less than helpful EU trade negotiators for decades. But that's neither here nor there.

That's a fair point. But will Canada be able to churn out as much as they need on demand? Without a domestic metallurgy industry, they'd effectively have to start from scratch again. And it's not as if US manufacturers couldn't produce steel cheaply if they use modern production methods.

juniper wrote:

We don't know that at all really. Not disclosing his reasoning in full isn't the same as not having a reason. It might just be that he doesn't care about securing strategically important industry at all, and it's all about trade imbalances, as he says. But who knows? My only point was that there's more to the economics than just pushing dollar values around on a spreadsheet. I just found it a curious that he's focusing on a key strategically important resource.

Canada is a human rights violator. They have oppressed and subjugated the people of Quebec far too long, denying them the right of self-determination and the right to their own culture. The people of Quebec are ready to rise up and are demanding full autonomy. They fought alongside us during our revolutionary war, and their culture is one of Democracy and Liberty, unlike the rest of the Britain-ish Canada. The U.S. should side with Quebec and use it as an excuse to seize Canada and exploit is natural resources and backward people.

Who can eat apple pie after watching baby seals being clubbed to death by Canadians? And the dwarf tossing!

Quebec has had a referendum (actually more than one).

Celine and Justin wouldn't come if you didn't love them.

Baby seal is the only meat I eat and is considered vegetarian in Canada. I am technically a pinnipatarian (vegetables, eggs, milk and baby seals are ok to eat). If you fly air canada, you'll see that as a meal category.
