|
|
Hi there, I've been attempting to UEFI dual boot my computer with windows 8.1. I should add, I've already had a successful install, but because I failed to install networking properly, I decided to reinstall Gentoo and completely failed the second time around. So I know this will work!
I followed this guide
reference: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/UEFI_Dual_boot_with_Windows_7/8
and the chose the "Quick and easy" approach from it.
When it did work, I started the install in a non UEFI boot mode finished up until efibootmgr usage, and then rebooted in UEFI mode. Also, I vaguely remember accidentally making another ESP, and afterward finding out I didn't need two and that windows might even freakout if I made a second one. Even though, there might have been two ESP's while I was dual booting successfully. During the failed attempts, I only created a 4GB swap and 156GB rootfs partition in that order, I mounted the ESP from a seperate disk to /boot.
I'm completely lost as to what exactly is going wrong, but from what I've read online it seems I've got a kernel panic. (Upon boot and navigating the EFI bootloader, MSI Click-BIOS, I select my Gentoo entry and the initial printout eventually hangs). I was wondering if maybeI don't know what the hell the console is telling me, but I took a picture.

That looks bad, and not one of the normal errors one would expect to see from a first install. Can you try booting with noapic, or a kernel newer than 4.14? |

Should I just disable ACPI options in the kernel? When I search noapic I only find it as a grub argument, which I'm not using.
And how could I choose a newer kernel? |

Wow!, I just went through another reinstall and it just workged!
Heres what I changed from my previous processes. I didn't configure the -march flag inside my make.conf. Originally I had that set to optimize my Skylake processor, but its working after I set it back to -march=native.
I also used paths from / in my /etc/fstab such as /dev/sda1 instead of UUID's. |

gangsterTown,
Welcome to Gentoo.
None of the changes you list account for your original kernel panic.
/etc/fstab can't be read until root is mounted and your original kernel didn't get that far.
make.conf is not used when the kernel is compiled. _________________ Regards,

Now that you mention it, when I was configuring the EFI stub kernel, I used the address from root, similar to how I wrote my /etc/fstab. (I wrote /dev/sda2), instead of using a PARTUUID. I’ll update this thread if I remember any other changes I made during the installation. |
