Hi.

It's been a while I've been having this issue and I still haven't figured out what's wrong. Every time I close then open the lid on my Dell Latitude E6530 while X is working, the screen turns black (on closing the lid) but stays black even after I open it. I've disabled Xfce's power management so that it only locks the display when the lid closes (there is no "Don't do anything" option, alas).

The problem occurs only in X, not on consoles. Switching to a TTY and back to X doesn't help. I've also tried
Code:
xset dpms force on; xset s reset
still no change.
  • If I suspend my laptop with
    Code:
    acpitool -s
(or anything else) and *then* close the lid, everything's fine.
  • If I switch to a TTY, close the lid, open the lid and get back to X, everything's fine.
The problem only occurs in X and if I close the lid when X is the active display. I'm using nouveau. However I cannot figure out if it's a bug in nouveau, a bug in the ACPI BIOS or any other bug. Or a configuration issue.

EDIT: I also forgot to mention that the issue occurs every other time I close the lid. I.e. if I close/open the lid once, the display stays black. If I do that again then it comes back to life again. Then if I do the same operation again, the display stays black. And so on...

EDIT: Right, I forgot the question: anyone got an idea where I should look first?

I'd try to rule out the nouveau driver. Try using the Nvidia driver or nv. Nouveau is very nice, but it does have bugs. Make sure you completely remove nouveau from your system when troubleshooting this and that the module is not loaded when another driver is.

Thanks audiodef. I'm almost sure this would occur only (extrapolating from your suggestion) with nouveau — I indeed have several non resolved bugs so far with nouveau. I haven't used the proprietary blob from nVidia on my machine so there's a certain amount of work ahead. What I'm going to do is suspend my laptop using ACPI events instead of using the power manager GUI for I know it works that way — and there's even no sense in having suspend work only from X, I want my laptop to go to sleep whenever I close the lid, should it be with Xorg or any TTY.

Thanks for your suggestion though.
