Sorry, just not feeling it. Just me.

Yeah, some parts are a bit off.

Like this song? Half really good, half cringe.

No idea, but I really like it. Sorry

Sinister sounding triplets are always appreciated.

Neil Peart - A Work In Progress Part 2

(Part 1)

General commentary and more specifically about or around the time of Test For Echo ('96).

What I found interesting was the time period and how it fit togetther with other details.

Prior to Test for Echo and while working on the Buddy Rich project (or shortly thereafter), Neil began to change his style of drumming with the help of Freddie Gruber. He had been playing for ~30 years at this point. Within one year, he had changed sufficiently to work on a new album (Test For Echo). Initially no one really noticed a difference. The producer commented that "he still sounded like himself." It wasn't until they started playing that Alex and Geddy realized they had to make adjustments to his new style. Previously they relied on click tracks, now, they didn't use one. The most obvious changes were his physical setup of the drum set (more space compared to the common "everything close" concept) and switching from matched to traditional grip.

In the year following the album's release, Nei's daughter died in a car accident. Ten months later, his wife died from cancer and the band went on hiatus. That's a lot of change in a relatively short period.

A while back I had tried to "rate" their catalog. I put Test For Echo in a second tier (the second tier being very close to the first tier, but just not quite good enough to be included). Lyrically, Dog Years and Virtuality were just too bad to make the cut. Vapor Trails was the next album in '02, Feedback (all covers) '04, Snakes & Arrows '07 and their final album, Clockwork Angels in '12.

In the albums since Test For Echo, something just never gelled with me. It wasn't until this review that I realized why I was much less enamored with the material. The best I can articulate it is that the choice of words in the lyrics just can't be easily sung (and I don't believe it is a limitation on Geddy's part). I think it comes down to rhythm and flow. Prior to thiis period, I think the lyrics were simply more "singable," had better rhythm (meter?) whatever.

When I started rating the albums, I had thought I would be placing Test For Echo fairly low as I rarely sought out it (or their subsequent albums) to listen to on their own. Turns out I lke most of the album, but those two songs were just "that bad." I made note of struggling with 7 of 13 songs on Vapor Trails, and I think I was trying to not mark down some of the others. The first track is the only one that I can really say I like on that album.

While there are tracks on every Rush album that I appreciate, I really do prefer the time between 2112 & Moving Pictures the most. Were I to pick a favorite album, it would be Hemispheres... but every album in that span is great. The lyrics are amazing... objectivism mixed with human experience and Western culture (Don Quixote for the Spaceship "Rocinante" as a clear example), and the music is just... amazing.

From the "opera" of 2112 to the more focused A farewell to Kings, and then onto the absolute exuberance of Hemispheres... then onto when they really focused it all to its essence in both Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures... that, for me, is Rush at its best.

Here's how I eventually grouped them. I wasn't able to make it more granular. 1 and 2 are very close. I found that when I was thinking of moving something from Group 2 into 1, I couldn't elevate it above something else in Group 2, and I just like the stuff in the first group a tad more. Usually something in Group 2 was just "off" (Geddy's "rap" in Roll the Bones for example). There's a bit more of a gap down to group 3, but not much. After that, it is a fairly big drop. I like the music of Clockwork, but the lyrics are lacking, and I think they suffer some from from the "singable" issue, though not as much as the prior two albums (chronological order within groups):

Group 1:
Fly By Night '75
Moving Pictures '81
Grace Under Pressure '84
Power Windows '85
Hold Your Fire '87
Counterparts '93

Group 2:
A Farewell to Kings '77
Hemispheres '78
Signals '82
Presto '89
Roll the Bones '91
Test for Echo '96

Group 3:
Rush '74
Caress of Steel '75
2112 '76
Permanent Waves '80

Group 4:
Clockwork Angels '12

Group 5:
Vapor Trails '02
Snakes & Arrows '07
