Hello,

After building and maintaining several Gentoo systems, it's the first time this happened to me.

1. Network manager and nm-applet are in fact running.
2. Notification area is added to the panel, the bordered square can be seen, but empty.
3. All the functionality of the icon is present: left-click shows all connections, including wifi. Right-click shows edit connections,...
4. Changing icon theme does not change anything
5. nm-device-wireless icon, as prescribed in /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop, exists and opens correctly.

Tried almost everything that I could read on the web for a whole week. Nothing helped. This is only a nuisance because the functionality is all there. But it is irritating

Any ideas, please?

TIA,
jss

Does the Exec field on /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop contains : dbus-launch nm-applet ?

Thank you for helping.

No, it did not. But it also didn't solve the problem. I would appreciate any other ideas.

Silly question, Did you download gnome-extra/nm-applet?

The other thing that I remember to use, is going to "Session and Startup" and selecting Network under Application Autostart tab.

Thank you for your continued interest.

In my opinion there are no silly questions, only silly answers. But yes, it is part of my world set.

Yes, Network is checked, which execs nm-applet. Tried it with dbus-launch according to your suggestion, remember?

[EDIT] I think I'll rebuild system and world during the weekend as a long-shot.

Code:
user@mypc ~ $ killall nm-applet
user@mypc ~ $ nm-applet

(nm-applet:3358): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

In fact, after killing, it won't start again. I don't understand why it is not calling display :0

No mention in log.

Code:
$ eix nm-applet
[I] gnome-extra/nm-applet
     Available versions:  ~1.4.6-r1 ~1.8.2 (~)1.8.6 {gcr +introspection +modemmanager selinux teamd}
     Installed versions:  1.8.6(11:53:56 21-04-2018)(introspection modemmanager -gcr -selinux -teamd)
     Homepage:            https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/NetworkManager
     Description:         GNOME applet for NetworkManager

Can't upgrade, there's nowhere to. But sabayon has:
Code:
$ eix nm-applet-gtk2
* gnome-extra/nm-applet-gtk2 [1]
     Available versions:  ~0.9.8.10 {bluetooth gconf +introspection modemmanager}
     Homepage:            http://projects.gnome.org/NetworkManager/
     Description:         GNOME applet for NetworkManager, gtk+-2 flavour

But I hesitate because I think I'm running Xfce4 gtk3. At least I have ~/.config/gtk-3.0 (and gtk-2.0, obviously)

I run a eix-sync today. I have 1.86, but maybe upgrading could help. The other option is the option you mentionated about rebuild your system + wolrd.

Code:

eix nm-applet
[I] gnome-extra/nm-applet
     Available versions:  1.4.6-r1 ~1.8.2 ()1.8.6 ~1.8.10 {gcr +introspection +modemmanager selinux teamd}
     Installed versions:  1.8.6(11:27:51 PM 01/21/2018)(introspection modemmanager -gcr -selinux -teamd)
     Homepage:            https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/NetworkManager
     Description:         GNOME applet for NetworkManager

Yes, I think I'll rebuild the system during the weekend and post the result here.

Thank you for your strong support.
