PostPosted: Tue Apr 24, 2018 6:41 pm    Post subject: Can't see my android files from computer... Reply with quote

I have been struggling trying to properly access my Samsung S7 from my gentoo install without success for a few days now. After mounting the device I can see the folder structure inside its card memory, I can copy files into the card, but I can't neither copy nor even see any file inside the card from the gentoo install. Regarding the internal storage of the phone I just can't see anything or do anything with it. After trying, for example, to LS inside a folder in the card I first get some time with a frozen prompt for long seconds, sometimes minutes:

Code:

~> ls AndroidDevice/Card/DCIM/Camera/

Than, when the prompt is let go, the computer shows that all folders inside the phone are empty, which is not the case. An example:

Code:

~> ls AndroidDevice/Card/DCIM/Camera/
~>

If I try to access via pcmanfm I can again see all the folder structure inside the card, but again showing that all its folders are empty. I can't see anything inside the internal storage from pcmanfm. And I know that everything should be working because I am talking about the last one of my computers to be "converted" into gentoo, and up to a few months ago, when I was still running Fedora on this machine, I could access all files inside the phone, or at least see them, without any issues.

For clarification, I am mounting the device using simple-mtpfs:

Code:

~> simple-mtpfs -l
1: SamsungGalaxy models (MTP)
~> simple-mtpfs --device 1 AndroidDevice
~> ls AndroidDevice/
Card/  Phone/
~> mount | grep mtpfs
simple-mtpfs on /home/vinicius/AndroidDevice type fuse.simple-mtpfs (rw,nosuid,nodev,relatime,user_id=1000,group_id=1000)
~>

and in my kerrnel I have the FUSE option properly set:

Code:

root ~ # uname -r
4.9.76-gentoo-r1
root ~ # grep "FUSE" /boot/config-4.9.76-gentoo-r1
CONFIG_FUSE_FS=y

Finally, after just mounting the phone I notice no abnormal messages in dmesg:

Code:

[ 1610.187287] usb 1-2: new high-speed USB device number 9 using xhci_hcd
[ 1610.357573] usb 1-2: New USB device found, idVendor=04e8, idProduct=6860

[ 1610.357577] usb 1-2: Manufacturer: SAMSUNG
[ 1610.357578] usb 1-2: SerialNumber: kl18855eee1t123256

But after some of the failed attempts of accessing its files I eventually noticed a lot of selinux denials in dmesg

Code:

But that should not mean anything since, as seen, selinux is in perrmissive mode, not in enforcing or targeted.

Thank you all for your attention.

I never connect my phone via cable. Instead I have installed an FTP server app. It was then easy to transfer files to and from linux. :)

I'm not familiar with the S7 but I would advise you to simply use usb debugging mode + adb pull or removable memory card + card reader unless required otherwise.

On new Androids you have to select MTP mode from phones notifications every time you plug the cable.

First of all thank you all for your replies.

Irre: I would prefer to connect via cable, since I would like to backup regularly everything in the phone, and I am talking about more than 20gb. If I could simply run rsync it would be perfect;

Torro and P.Kosunen: I enabled developer mode, and just after that I enabled either MTP mode and USB debugging mode, and the problem persists without any changes. I tried adb as well, but I confess to not know how to handle it properly. Anyway, I got the impression that it did not worked also.

I also changed the usb cable, following an advice I have read somewhere else, but also without any success. I also tried to mount using the -o allow-other option from simple-mtpfs, also without any success.

Thank you again.

Well, I just tested with my wife's phone, a galaxy J7, and everything works flawlessly... So the problem is very likely in the phone, which is frustrating. A possibility would be to simple factory reset everything, and try again, but what am I going to do with all my data? Thank you all...

Probably you already tried, but anyway: Sometimes just rebooting the phone helps.

Yes mv, I tried that already without success.

Try with the gphoto2 command line instead, its MTP driver is slightly less broken than anything else I've tried. Ignore the program's name, it can download any file type this way. It also supports PTP mode which should be 100% reliable (as long as what you want is in a folder the phone exports over PTP).

(also be warned - MTP doesn't show entire directories sometimes. Not sure if that's a bug in the phone or libmtp)

Well, I guess I did some advance here... I was checking my phone folders and I noticed a lot of files called .nomedia, all over the phone. Than I remembered that I was the one who put most of them there in the first place, and I did it because that was a workaround to make the native music player of adroid to never look at those folders for sound files. That worked, but I had to put .nomedia in every folder in which there was a sound file that I did not wanted to show up in the music player. After removing ALL of those .nomedia files (one of them I could not remove, the system wont allow), than I could see nearly all files in all folders after mounting, and copy them into the gentoo install. However one of the folders, the one containing all camera shots and located in the card, I still cant access. It is a huge folder in size, with more than 20gb, so it may be something related with its size.

If Ant P's suggestion doesn't pan out please try this:

mkdir and cd into a new directory of your choice (just a precaution).
Enable USB debugging mode on your S7, connect (by USB cable) to your Gentoo system.
Execute adb usb on your Gentoo install.
adb devices should show your s7 as a connected device now.
Assuming your files are in /Card/DCIM/Camera execute adb pull /Card/DCIM/Camera .
After you're done with adb, execute adb kill-server to stop the adb daemon.
Disable usb debugging on your S7.

Let me know if this works for you.

You can open a shell on your S7 by executing adb shell if you like.
for more info on adb have a look at adb help (e.g. adb help 2>&1 | less) and the Gentoo Wiki: Android/adb .

I installed gphoto, and did everything the wiki told me to and a little more: 1) I first added USE="gphoto 2" to USE in /etc/portage/make.conf; 2) added CAMERAS="samsung" in /etc/portage/make.conf; 3) did a world update 4) installed gphoto2 with serial as local use flag; 5) rebooted the computer.

Than when I connected the phone to the machine a pop up immediately show up asking which program should I use, and I choose an archive manager (pcmanfm in my case). Then I navigated to Card/DCIM/Camera but, after long seconds loading, It returned a I/O error. After that I unmounted the phone from pcmanfm. After that I was not able to open gphoto2 anymore, it shows no connected device via gphoto2 --auto-detect and it just does not pop up again. I cant reboot the PC right now, but in a few hours I might repeat this whole process.

So after gphoto2 failed, I connected the phone and run the commands as shown below:

Code:

~> adb usb

* daemon started successfully *
restarting in USB mode
~> adb devices

As you can see it apparently works, except by the fact that it does not shows my sdcard, since the sdcard shown is not actually the external card.

Have a look at the /mnt directory. Perhaps your SD card is mounted under /mnt/extSdCard or /mnt/external_sd ?

No, apparently it is not there. Have a look:

Code:

You can see the contents of mnt/, and there is nothing resembling an external sdcard, except for the folder sdcard itself. However, as you can also see, the subfolder mnt/sdcard/ is the same as the folder sdcard/, as illustrated by the contents of the subfolders mnt/sdcard/DCIM/Camera/ and sdcard/DCIM/Camera/.

You'll have to find the correct location of the files yourself if you want to use adb.

At the moment I'd suggest taking the external card from your phone and using a card reader that's connected to your PC to see if you can read the files from it.

But is there a way of doing this? I mean, looking at the phone storage either from android or from adb is there a way of locating the extcard? All I know, because of the directory structure show after mounting the phone with simple-mtpfs, is that the card appears to be at the same directory level as the internal storage, but I am not sure...

I am not sure that will be possible, my extcard is encrypted, and I dont think I have either the key of the passphrase, I think the key is generated automatically and stored somewhere inside the phone when you choose to encrypt the extcard.

Oh, and, by the way, I have looked inside all folders show by adb shell, and no sign of the extcard there...

It's very unlikely your phone speaks the proprietary samsung camera protocol or has an RS232 port; did you leave ptp2 enabled? Is your phone set to MTP/PTP mode when you run that command?

I guess it is, at least is what is shown in the notifications...

You'll have to find the correct location of the files yourself if you want to use adb.

At the moment I'd suggest taking the external card from your phone and using a card reader that's connected to your PC to see if you can read the files from it.

It worked, partially, but it dit! Well, the external card was located inside "storage/F0FF-1D06/", and the command
Code:
adb pull storage/F0FF-1D06
worked perfectly. I guess I did not found it on the first time because doing LS inside the subfolder "storage" returned "F0FF-1D06 Private emulated enc_emulated self", and I taught that was an error message or something. So I finally managed to recover into my laptop all pictures and movies made with the camera, which as my goal in the first place.

However I still can't see the contents of this folder neither from terminal (the standard "ls Card/DCIM/Camera" does not work) nor from pcmamfm (when I click on the folder it just stalls and I have to change into "Charging mode" in my android as the only way to unlock pcmanfm). Using gphoto2 also does not work, now at least I can get an error message:

Code:

~> gphoto2 --auto-detect
Model                          Port

Samsung Galaxy models (MTP)    usb:001,072

Go ahead and mark it solved, if you think it is. You can still continue in this thread if you want to.

Weird that gphoto2 is doing that even with PTP... try gphoto2 --list-folders, then (assuming this folder exists) gphoto2 -f '/store_00010001/DCIM' -L should show the photos.
Finally gphoto2 -f '/store_00010001/DCIM' -P ought to grab them. No need to do that now, you said you got it done, but it's useful for future reference.

Well, what I have learned is that there is a way of extracting photos or other files from the extcard of my mobile, but the solution is far from perfect. In fact it feels/sounds like a huge workaround: 1) put your phone into developer mode; 2) install adb, which seems to be made exclusively for developers and not regular users; 3) extract via adb after guessing where is your extcard.

I mean, a regular user should not be using adb for basic tasks like this one. From what I have learned adb has the power to format your entire phone with a simple command like, so it is dangerous...

What I would call a solution would be something that allows me to mount the phone, like simple-mtpfs does, AND allows me to see every file inside of it as it happens with any other storage medium. Here I can see and extract via adb, but apparently cant use any other program to see its contents, which in my case includes gphoto2, pcmanfm and simple terminal. I have been accessing my android phones since the first one I bought in my linux machines (almost all of them fedora, none of them gentoo), so it must be something missing either in the kernel or some local use flag or even a bug that is not showing itself properly. In other words, there is still some configuration issue in my box.

As you can see it either does not work or I am using the commands you suggested incorrectly:

Code:

myusb> gphoto2 --list-folders
There are 2 folders in folder '/'.
 - store_00010001
 - store_00020002
There are 30 folders in folder '/store_00010001'.

The input/output error persists, and, even after locating the folders, I cant list its contents. Also, there is that pop up issue that I mentioned earlier in another reply: gphoto2 popped up the first time I plugged in the phone just after installing gphoto2 itself, and that never happened again, which is even more strange.

Thank you again for your reply.

I work with adb & usb debugging mode exclusively on any and every android device. For me personally it's the best (and least complicated) way of working with the system. I did consider MTP/PTP (of course) and after a bit of fighting with it I decided to stop spending my time and energy working on a problem that is, IMO, easily fixed by using adb.

I mean, a regular user should not be using adb for basic tasks like this one. From what I have learned adb has the power to format your entire phone with a simple command like, so it is dangerous...

I may be mistaken but isn't an adb shell by default a user shell? If it has the power to make important changes that would mean that your system's privileges are misconfigured.

I need to log in to the root account to make any possibly dangerous alterations (again, I may be mistaken, if so: please let me know).

It worked, partially, but it dit!
Code:
adb pull storage/F0FF-1D06
worked perfectly

Glad to hear you now at least have access to your files! I'm sorry I can't help you with gphoto2 and MTP/PTP.

And thank you again Torro. Please don't misunderstand me, I am glad that a solution has been found, I am just saying that the solution is not ideal. Obviously there must be something misconfigured somewhere, there is no other reason for simple mounting MTP not working properly on my gentoo install if it does in other distros. One thing is something that can't work under any linux distro and therefore also does not work in gentoo, that would be sad but perfectly understandable, another thing is something that seems to work everywhere else and does not work exclusively for gentoo. That just can't be, gentoo is more flexible by construction, so that just can't be. Well, I am a resilient user, so I will keep looking into this for a while, and if I find something I will post here. Thank you very much again.
