Hi
I would like to install gentoo on a external hard drive. What would be the best way to go about it?
Thanks in advance for all the help.

Just like normal install.
If you plan to boot it on different hardwares, then you should make sure to set CFLAGS to contain no platform/processor specific switches. -mtune=x86_64 is maybe something you'd want. Also in this case take into account if you need to be able to boot from BIOS and UEFI platforms.

Just grab gentoo installation manual and any sort of linux livecd (gentoo rescue cd is often recommended, though you can use anything you have around) and go for it. https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64
There is no difference, between installing on internal or external hdd. Just make sure you format the correct hard drive. I assume you do have at least one drive you _don't_ want to wipe out, and an external drive you want to install on. So, pay close attention to the devices.

Also, mind that gentoo has a pretty steep learning curve. If you are new to linux, you may want to consider starting with something easier. It would likely save you quite a bit of headache and frustration.

You will need to add some delay (rootdelay=x I think?) to allow the USB to boot up before it looks for your root on external drive.

Apologies if I take a while to respond. I'm currently working on the dematerialization circuit for my blue box.
