PostPosted: Tue Mar 27, 2018 7:17 am    Post subject: X does not recognize other monitors Reply with quote

So I'm trying to get my multi monitor setup going but I seem to have hit a wall. I've got 2 monitors hooked up via DVI/HDMI to a 1050 and another monitor via VGA to the motherboard VGA port. Only the monitor connected to the VGA on the mobo seems to work. HDMI is blank and DVI is stucked at the openrc boot screen.

This is the output of /var/log/Xorg.0.log

So far a few things stand out to me

Code:

[    48.017] (EE) [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:01:00.0: -19

[    47.959]    GeForce GTX 400 (NVC0)

Is the nouveau driver even compatible with a 1050? Looking at their page
it seems like it but it doesn't show here.

Code:

[    47.575] (**) |   |-->Monitor "Monitor1"
[    47.575] (**) |   |-->Device "Card1"

It seems that the cards are set up properly, but only 2 monitors appear (only 1 which works). This also appears in the xorg config file.

So far I've tried to reinstall the driver and also do Xorg -configure. The latter fails with "number of created screens does not match number of detected devices". xrandr only seems to report the VGA monitor.

Normally, you would disable the onboard graphics, hook up all monitors to the nvidia, emerge nvidia-drivers, blacklist nouveau and be fine. Anything that speaks against that?

You're probably better off deleting that xorg.conf entirely. It's entirely either comments, sections that are ignored entirely (your attempt to use obsolete drivers with your input devices), sections that just restate 30-year-old defaults (are you actually using server-side raster fonts or the magic key combo to switch to 4-bit colour depth?), or errors (your nvidia card doesn't even have working DRM drivers, so putting it in xorg.conf won't do anything).

I'd prefer to use the opensource drivers if possible. The onboard graphics are currently necessary because to add the third monitor I need an adapter, which I currently don't possess.

I tried deleting it but xorg claims there aren't any screens detected. I tried X -configure again, but the error is still there.

I will try to use nvidia-drivers and see what I can get. If not I'll disable the onboard graphics and try a full reinstall (I've tried disabling it and one of the screens does power on, but still, no detected screens). Or would it be a better idea if I remove the drivers and X, disable the onboard graphics then emerge them again?

With nouveau, you should run a more recent kernel, like 4.14 and have linux-firmware installed. Then check with
Code:
dmesg | grep nouveau

if the driver and firmware get loaded.
With prop. nvidia-drivers, you will have to set up PRIME to make use of the onboard graphics:

boobear,

Your kernel is missing nouveau support.

Make the internal graphics work alone first.
Then turn off the internal graphics and make nouveau work.

Once both bits work independently, make them work together.

Is the nouveau driver even compatible with a 1050? Looking at their page
it seems like it but it doesn't show here.

https://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/CodeNames/#NV130
What this tell:
* NV130 is code name familly for your card (NV137)
* NV130 "might" be support by nouveau (i just grab the codename info, not if really nouveau do support it)
* NV130 is not support by your current nouveau version
