audiodef,
Run alsamixer in the console and post the mixer settings between code tags.
Which input are you using? _________________ Regards,

I'm now noticing that it's *some* things that are quiet. Audacious seems okay. Bristol synths, super quiet. Might be specific to that package. _________________ decibel Linux: https://decibellinux.org

I have this problem also. Haven't been bothered to look into it yet because it isn't completely broken.

You are entering the confusing world of ALSA fine tuning now ... maybe there are some module parameters you can pass to the kernel? _________________ My Gentoo installation notes.

I don't know your setup, but, in the past, I have seen ms-windows overdrive audio hardware - sometimes to the point of clipping. Found this out while trying to use a laptop as a ready-made signal-generator for some impromptu scientific work. Worked fine on linux, but a co-worker got inconsistent results with - I think it was XP at the time (don't recall exactly).
I've seen more recently that they have "sound profiles" where it seems to do different things based on whether it is headphones, laptop speakers, or whatever. I would not be surprised if they are using some sort of compression algorithm to try to extract the most volume out of tiny speakers, which might explain some of the discrepancy you are hearing.
It still could well be a misconfiguration of ALSA or perhaps a bug in the driver, I don't know. I just wanted to alert that you can't always compare apples-to-apples against windows, because the signal that's coming out is often not the signal you think you're feeding it. Check with an oscilloscope on the headphone jack to be sure.
audiodef wrote: | I think the settings are actually okay and it was that one package (bristol) that was putting out low levels, so I'm going to consider it something in the package itself. Other synths, streaming radio plays at normal volumes. Windows is still a bit louder, but meh. |
This sometimes happens when the interface isn't a multiple of 8 bits (like if it is a 14-bit DAC, or perhaps even a better 18bit one), and the application or the driver isn't aligning the bits within the word as expected by the hardware. If the hardware expects the data in the most-significant bits and it isn't supplied there, it will be too soft. If the hardware expects it in the least-significant bits and the driver normalizes it to most-significant, it will sound overdriven and clipped. _________________ Many think that Dilbert is a comic. agree with Jaglover, laptop makers do love to pin a chipset strangely
time to pickup an option from the list:

I'm vaguely recalling the hardware/MSB/LSB stuff from my undergrad days in an audio tech program. Vaguely, because I never went on to specialize in that area so I didn't apply it much in practice. Cool stuff, though.
Going to look around at customizing ALSA config. In particular, boosting gain. Windows may be overdriving (no clipping noticed here, though) but I think this hardware can go a a bit higher. I think the speakers were designed to handle it.
I read something somewhere about the possibility of not all speakers being used. The laptop I'm using has this for aplay -L | grep CARD:
Code: |
surround21:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
HDA Intel PCH, ALC233 Analog
2.1 Surround output to Front and Subwoofer speakers
surround40:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
HDA Intel PCH, ALC233 Analog
4.0 Surround output to Front and Rear speakers
surround41:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
HDA Intel PCH, ALC233 Analog
4.1 Surround output to Front, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround50:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
HDA Intel PCH, ALC233 Analog
5.0 Surround output to Front, Center and Rear speakers
surround51:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
HDA Intel PCH, ALC233 Analog
5.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Rear and Subwoofer speakers
surround71:CARD=PCH,DEV=0
HDA Intel PCH, ALC233 Analog
7.1 Surround output to Front, Center, Side, Rear and Woofer speakers
|
And other stuff, but I'm wondering if only one pair of speakers is being used while the Realtek Windows driver takes advantage of all speakers, which is why it's "louder." _________________ decibel Linux: https://decibellinux.org
